Role Overview: OMS Site Reliability Engineer

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) specializing in Order Management Systems (OMS), specifically IBM Sterling OMS, to join our dynamic technical team in Marlborough, MA. This onsite role is pivotal in ensuring the seamless operation, high availability, and peak performance of our enterprise-level order management infrastructure. As an SRE, you will bridge the gap between software development and IT operations, applying a software engineering mindset to system administration and operational challenges. In the fast-paced retail and logistics landscape of 2026, the reliability of order processing systems is paramount to business success.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

  • OMS Platform Reliability: You will be responsible for maintaining, monitoring, and continuously improving the performance of Sterling OMS. Your primary goal is to ensure the platform meets or exceeds strict Service Level Agreements (SLAs) and provides a consistent experience for end-users.
  • Automation and Scripting: A significant portion of this role involves reducing operational ‘toil’ through the development of sophisticated scripts and automation tools. You will automate deployment pipelines, streamline incident response protocols, and create self-healing system capabilities using Java, Python, or Shell scripting.
  • Incident Management and RCA: When production incidents occur, you will lead the charge in troubleshooting and resolution. Beyond immediate fixes, you are expected to conduct thorough Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and lead post-mortem discussions to implement long-term preventative measures.
  • Observability and Monitoring: You will design and implement proactive monitoring, logging, and tracing solutions. By gaining deep insights into system health and user behavior, you will identify potential bottlenecks before they impact the business.
  • System Optimization and Capacity Planning: You will conduct regular performance tuning and capacity planning exercises. This ensures that the Sterling OMS environment can handle massive surges in order volume, particularly during peak retail seasons or promotional events.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: You will work closely with software development teams to ensure that new features are designed with reliability and deployability in mind, fostering a true DevOps culture.

Required Technical Qualifications

  • Sterling OMS Expertise: Proven experience in managing and optimizing IBM Sterling Order Management Systems or similar enterprise-grade platforms is mandatory.
  • Programming Proficiency: Strong coding skills in Java are required, along with proficiency in Python or Shell scripting for automation tasks.
  • Cloud and Infrastructure: Hands-on experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or GCP is essential. You should be comfortable with containerization technologies like Docker and orchestration via Kubernetes.
  • CI/CD and DevOps Tools: Familiarity with continuous integration and continuous deployment tools is necessary to support modern software delivery lifecycles.
  • Operating Systems: Deep knowledge of Linux/Unix environments and system-level troubleshooting.

Professional Skills and Strategic Impact

The ideal candidate possesses an ‘operations mindset,’ thriving in large-scale, distributed software environments. You must demonstrate strong communication skills, as you will be coordinating with both technical stakeholders and non-technical business units. Furthermore, this role requires effective coordination with offshore teams to ensure 24/7 coverage and project continuity. By joining this team, you are not just managing a platform; you are engineering the backbone of a global commerce engine. We value continuous learning and encourage our SREs to stay abreast of emerging trends in AIOps and automated remediation to keep our systems at the forefront of the industry.
