Role Overview

Virginia State University’s Information Technology Services (ITS) department is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated IT Governance and Compliance Analyst with a specialized focus on Artificial Intelligence (AI). This 6-month contract position is based in South Chesterfield, VA, and operates under a hybrid work model. The successful candidate will be instrumental in strengthening institutional compliance and technology oversight within a higher education environment. As AI technologies become increasingly integrated into academic and administrative workflows, this role ensures that such practices align with academic integrity, regulatory requirements, and the university’s mission to support teaching, learning, and student success.

Key Responsibilities

  • Higher Education Governance: Maintain and evolve IT governance frameworks (COBIT, ITIL) that support the complex ecosystem of academic, research, and administrative operations.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Actively monitor and enforce compliance with federal and state regulations, including FERPA, HIPAA, and other security standards relevant to higher education.
  • AI Policy Development: Lead the development and coordination of AI-related updates to institutional policies, standards, and guidelines. This includes oversight of data privacy, cybersecurity, and the ethical use of technology resources.
  • Audit and Documentation: Coordinate AI collaborations and prepare comprehensive documentation for internal and external audits, ensuring accreditation-related technology compliance is met.
  • Security Awareness: Leverage AI tools to monitor and enhance compliance with security awareness programs tailored for faculty, staff, and students.
  • Continuous Improvement: Stay abreast of emerging AI governance regulations and global compliance best practices, providing strategic recommendations for process improvements within the ITS department.

Technical Requirements and Qualifications

  • Governance Frameworks: Minimum of 10 years of experience working with governance frameworks such as COBIT and ITIL, alongside compliance standards like NIST and ISO.
  • IT GRC Experience: At least 10 years of dedicated experience in IT governance, risk, or compliance roles, preferably within large-scale or regulated organizations.
  • AI Compliance: 5 years of experience specifically engaging business partners and technical teams in AI compliance initiatives.
  • Higher Education Systems: 3 years of experience with higher education systems, including Learning Management Systems (LMS), Student Information Systems (SIS), and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) tools.
  • Analytical Prowess: 8 years of experience interpreting complex compliance requirements for AI and applying them effectively to academic and administrative contexts.
  • Education: A Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Business, or a related field is highly preferred.

Work Environment and Strategic Impact

This position is located in South Chesterfield, VA, at the Virginia State University campus. The work schedule is hybrid, requiring the resource to be onsite from day one for two to three days per week. There is no option for a fully remote arrangement. The analyst will report directly to the Director of IT Governance, Risk & Compliance, serving as a subject matter expert on the intersection of AI and institutional policy. By ensuring that AI initiatives are both compliant and ethically sound, the analyst will help VSU maintain its reputation for academic excellence while embracing cutting-edge technological advancements. The role requires a proactive individual who can bridge the gap between technical implementation and regulatory oversight, fostering a culture of security and compliance across the university.


Special Requirements

Hybrid Schedule: 2-3 days onsite per week (No remote only option). Interview Process: Virtual followed by mandatory In-person interview. Domain: Higher Education and AI Governance.


Compensation & Location

Salary: $150,000 – $200,000 per year
