Position Summary

We are looking for an experienced and proactive Linux Administrator to join our infrastructure team in Minneapolis, MN. This onsite role is vital for the installation, configuration, and ongoing maintenance of our diverse Linux server environment. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the high availability, security, and performance of our systems across multiple distributions. This is a comprehensive role that covers everything from hardware provisioning to advanced automation and security compliance. You will be part of a team that values technical precision and robust system architecture.

Core Responsibilities

  • Install, configure, and maintain Linux servers across various distributions, including RHEL, CentOS, Ubuntu, Debian, and SUSE.
  • Manage both physical and virtual Linux environments, with a heavy focus on VMware virtualization technologies and hypervisor management.
  • Execute regular system updates, security patches, and hardening procedures in alignment with industry best practices and CIS benchmarks.
  • Configure and manage essential system services, daemons, and startup processes using systemd and init.d.
  • Implement robust user account management and access controls, including the enforcement of strict sudo policies and LDAP/AD integration.
  • Monitor system performance and resource utilization to facilitate effective capacity planning and prevent downtime.
  • Manage disk storage using LVM, ensuring optimal filesystem performance and partition schemes across local and network storage (NFS, iSCSI).
  • Optimize kernel parameters and perform system tuning to meet the specific demands of our application workloads.
  • Deploy and provision new servers using automation tools and kickstart/preseed configurations to ensure consistency across the environment.
  • Design and implement comprehensive backup and recovery strategies using tools like rsync, Bacula, or Veeam, and perform regular disaster recovery drills.

Networking and Security

  • Configure network interfaces, routing, VLANs, and bonding/teaming to ensure reliable connectivity.
  • Manage host-based firewalls using iptables, firewalld, or nftables to protect sensitive data and ensure compliance.
  • Implement and maintain VPN solutions such as OpenVPN or IPsec for secure remote access.
  • Configure SELinux or AppArmor security policies to provide an additional layer of protection against unauthorized access.
  • Manage SSL/TLS certificates and key management for secure communications across the network.
  • Perform regular security audits and vulnerability assessments to identify and mitigate risks before they can be exploited.

Automation and Application Support

  • Develop and maintain automation scripts using Bash, Python, or Perl to streamline repetitive tasks and task scheduling.
  • Install and configure web servers like Apache and Nginx, as well as application servers like Tomcat and JBoss.
  • Support database server operations for MySQL, PostgreSQL, and Oracle, coordinating with DBAs for high availability and replication.
  • Utilize monitoring and logging stacks such as Datadog, ELK, and Splunk to gain deep visibility into system health and performance metrics.

Qualifications

  • Significant experience in Linux system administration within an enterprise environment, supporting mission-critical systems.
  • Strong understanding of networking protocols, security principles, and storage management.
  • Proficiency in scripting and automation to drive operational efficiency and reduce manual intervention.
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex system issues, including boot failures and kernel panics, and perform root cause analysis under pressure.
  • Excellent documentation skills and a commitment to maintaining accurate system records and troubleshooting procedures.

Compensation & Location

Salary: $65 – $85 per year (Estimated)
