Position Summary

We are looking for a seasoned Process Automation Engineer with over 12 years of professional experience to lead automation initiatives in Herndon, VA. This role is critical for deconstructing manual business processes and transforming them into efficient, automated workflows using Robotic Process Automation (RPA) and other cutting-edge technologies. The ideal candidate will be a systems thinker who can navigate complex IT ecosystems and deliver measurable improvements in cycle times and error rates. This is a high-impact role requiring a blend of analytical prowess and technical understanding.

Core Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive process mapping and analysis using Value Stream Mapping (VSM) and Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN).
  • Deconstruct manual tasks into fundamental steps to identify automation opportunities and distinguish value-added activities from waste.
  • Conduct Root Cause Analysis using methodologies like the ‘5 Whys’ or Fishbone Diagrams to understand the underlying logic of existing processes.
  • Translate business observations into clear, unambiguous requirements, including detailed user stories and acceptance criteria.
  • Build data-driven business cases for automation by analyzing process data such as volumes, error rates, and operational costs.
  • Collaborate with technical teams to specify functional and non-functional requirements for RPA bots, APIs, and custom scripts.
  • Ensure new automated solutions integrate seamlessly with upstream and downstream systems within the enterprise IT ecosystem.

Technical Proficiency

  • Solid grasp of automation technologies, including the capabilities and limitations of RPA platforms, API integrations, and workflow scripts.
  • Foundational knowledge of database structures (SQL) and system communication protocols (APIs) to define data-related requirements accurately.
  • Expertise in creating detailed flowcharts and visual process models to communicate current and future state architectures.
  • Experience in a high-compliance environment, ensuring that all automated processes adhere to internal guidelines and industry standards.

Work Environment and Expectations

This position is based in Herndon, VA, and follows a hybrid office model. Candidates must be in the office at least 4 days per week, with the flexibility to work 5 days on-site when project demands require. A significant aspect of this role is the eventual conversion to a Full-Time Employee (FTE) status, currently projected for October 2026. Candidates must be authorized to work in the US and be prepared for a rigorous technical screening process that evaluates both their analytical skills and their understanding of automation lifecycles.

Local candidates only; Must be willing to convert to FTE in October 2026; Hybrid/Onsite 4-5 days per week.


Compensation & Location

Salary: $160,000 – $210,000 per year (Estimated)

Location: Herndon, VA
