Role Overview

The Healthcare Project Manager (Clinical Project Manager) is a specialized professional tasked with the complex orchestration of Electronic Health Record (EHR) and Electronic Medical Record (EMR) implementations. In the modern healthcare landscape of 2026, this role has evolved to encompass not just technical deployment but also deep clinical integration and data-driven optimization. The primary objective is to ensure that clinical workflows are seamlessly integrated into the digital environment, meeting all regulatory requirements while simultaneously improving the efficiency of healthcare providers and the quality of patient care. The workflow begins with Project Initiation and Planning, where the HPM must define the project scope, objectives, and goals in close collaboration with clinical leadership and IT teams. This involves conducting a thorough needs assessment to evaluate current workflows, system requirements, and identifying gaps in existing EHR/EMR systems. A comprehensive project roadmap is developed, detailing timelines, milestones, resource allocation, and risk management strategies. Compliance is a cornerstone of this phase, requiring strict adherence to healthcare regulations such as HIPAA, HITECH, and ONC Certification. Stakeholder engagement is critical, as the HPM must obtain buy-in from physicians, nurses, administrators, and IT teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with major vendors like Oracle Health (formerly Cerner), EPIC, Meditech, and Altera (formerly Allscripts) to customize workflows.
  • Ensure system capabilities align with clinical, operational, and billing needs, while defining interoperability requirements for integrating the EHR with Laboratory Information Systems (LIS), PACS (Imaging), Pharmacy, and Billing applications.
  • Establish data migration strategies to ensure data integrity and security.
  • Conduct workflow analysis to identify inefficiencies in patient documentation and medication management, working with clinicians to design optimized workflows that reduce burnout.
  • Ensure the EHR supports clinical decision support (CDS) and evidence-based care guidelines.
  • Oversee system configuration and testing, including User Acceptance Testing (UAT) with end-users and interoperability testing using HL7 and FHIR interfaces.
  • Develop tailored training programs and provide ongoing support to facilitate adoption.
  • Oversee go-live planning and deployment with minimal disruption, providing at-the-elbow support and monitoring system performance in real-time.
  • Conduct post-implementation evaluations to measure performance and user satisfaction, working on continuous updates and patches.
  • Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) like chart completion rates and medication reconciliation accuracy.
  • Support advanced analytics, predictive modeling, and population health initiatives using EHR data.

Technical and Professional Requirements

Technical proficiency in tools like ServiceNow (Project Management module), Microsoft Project, JIRA, and SmartSheets is essential. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience with specific Inpatient and Outpatient EHR systems such as Oracle Health, EPIC, Meditech, and Athena. Relevant certifications such as Project Management Professional (PMP) from PMI or Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) are highly valued, especially as they supplement or substitute for advanced degrees. The role requires a deep understanding of the 2026 healthcare environment, including the shift toward value-based care and the integration of AI-driven clinical insights into standard workflows. Candidates must demonstrate a track record of leading large-scale digital transformations in a clinical setting, managing multi-disciplinary teams, and navigating the complexities of federal and state healthcare regulations.
