The Future of AI Engineering at Meta
In the rapidly advancing world of 2026, AI agents are no longer just experimental; they are the backbone of customer interaction and internal productivity. We are looking for an AI Back End Engineer to join the team at Meta in Redwood City, CA. In this role, you will own the backend systems that make AI agents reliable in production. This includes managing agent runtime services, complex integrations, data modeling, and platform reliability. You will be at the forefront of designing, shipping, and hardening systems that power real customer workflows at a massive scale.
Core Responsibilities and Technical Scope
- Agent Runtime Management: You will own the services responsible for tool execution, state management, orchestration, and rate limiting. Ensuring idempotency and robust retry logic is critical for maintaining agent reliability.
- API and Contract Design: You will design stable, versioned internal and external APIs, webhooks, and integration adapters that allow AI agents to interact seamlessly with various platforms.
- Data Modeling: You will model complex domain data, including schemas for agent memory, workflow history, audit trails, and multi-tenant isolation using relational databases like Postgres or MySQL.
- Reliability Engineering: You will define and maintain SLIs/SLOs, implementing tracing, circuit breakers, and incident response protocols to ensure 99.9% uptime for AI services.
- Performance Optimization: You will optimize latency and throughput for inference and tool-call costs, managing runaway tasks and ensuring efficient use of vector search and feature stores.
What We Are Looking For
- Experience: 7+ years of experience, with at least 6 years building backend systems for production SaaS or distributed platforms.
- AI Expertise: Strong experience with LLM products, including prompting, tool calling, and latency/cost tradeoffs. Familiarity with agent architectures (planning/execution loops) is essential.
- Tech Stack: Proficiency with Vercel AI SDK, LangChain/LangGraph, Anthropic Agents, and OpenAI tool calling. Infrastructure familiarity with Kubernetes and serverless runtimes is required.
- Mindset: An ownership mindset is crucial. You should be comfortable with ambiguity and rapid iteration in a high-velocity environment.
This is a hybrid role requiring three days a week on-site in Redwood City, CA. The interview process is rigorous, involving two virtual rounds followed by a final in-person (F2F) interview. Compensation & Location
Salary: $195,000 – $275,000 per year (Estimated)
