Role Summary
The Mainframe IMS System Programmer is a critical infrastructure role responsible for the end-to-end lifecycle management of IBM’s Information Management System (IMS) environment on the z/OS platform. This is a highly technical, non-developer position that focuses on the installation, customization, maintenance, and high-availability support of IMS subsystems. The successful candidate will ensure the stability, performance, and security of IMS DB and TM components, supporting mission-critical applications that drive the business. This role requires a deep understanding of mainframe internals and the ability to manage complex system upgrades and migrations.
Detailed Responsibilities
- Install, configure, and maintain IMS (Database and Transaction Manager) subsystems, including associated tools like IMS Connect, ODBM, and BMPs.
- Manage system upgrades and apply maintenance via SMP/E, ensuring all APARs and PTFs are properly vetted and implemented.
- Monitor system performance and conduct capacity planning using tools such as OMEGAMON, Mainview, or RMF to optimize throughput.
- Provide Level 3 technical support for IMS-related incidents, system abends, and complex troubleshooting scenarios.
- Collaborate with IBM support teams for PMR resolution and the application of specialized patches.
- Support IMS DBA teams with DBD, PSB, and ACBGEN processes, and maintain RECON datasets and the IMS catalog.
- Develop and maintain operational automation scripts using REXX, CLIST, and JCL to improve efficiency and reduce manual errors.
- Participate in Disaster Recovery (DR) planning, testing, and execution to ensure business continuity.
- Ensure strict adherence to change management, audit, and compliance standards across all IMS environments.
- Mentor junior system programmers and contribute to the technical knowledge base of the infrastructure team.
Required Technical Skills
- Minimum of 7+ years of experience as an IMS System Programmer on z/OS.
- Expertise in SMP/E for software installation and maintenance management.
- Strong knowledge of IMS integration with distributed systems via IMS Connect, JDBC, and ODBM.
- Familiarity with z/OSMF, z/OS Connect EE, and modern API enablement initiatives on the mainframe.
- Proficiency in mainframe storage management, including DFSMS and VSAM.
- Experience with IMS utilities such as DFSURGU0, DFSURWF0, and HALDB management tools.
- Solid understanding of the interaction between IMS, DB2, CICS, and MQ.
Operational Requirements
This position is strictly onsite in Plano, TX. Candidates must be prepared to participate in a 24×7 on-call rotation to support critical system issues. Excellent communication and teamwork skills are essential, as you will be working with global teams across different time zones. This role is ideal for a seasoned mainframe professional who thrives in a high-stakes, high-availability environment.

Compensation & Location
Salary: $140,000 – $190,000 per year (Estimated)
