Role Overview
The Technical Business Analyst (TBA) specializing in Java APIs is a pivotal role designed to bridge the gap between complex business requirements and technical implementation. In the evolving landscape of 2026, where API-first strategies dominate the enterprise environment, this position requires a unique blend of analytical prowess and technical depth. You will be responsible for ensuring that the backend services developed by the engineering teams align perfectly with the strategic goals of the organization. This hybrid role requires deep functional knowledge alongside the ability to understand or even contribute to backend Java code and API architecture. You will function as the critical link between high-level business strategy and technical software execution.
Core Responsibilities
- Requirements Elicitation & Analysis: Collaborate with stakeholders to gather business needs and translate them into detailed technical specifications, user stories, and acceptance criteria using tools like Jira or Confluence.
- API Design & Documentation: Define and maintain API specifications (REST/SOAP) using OpenAPI/Swagger. This includes mapping data fields, defining error handling, and managing Postman collections.
- Technical Liaison: Act as a bridge between business units and Java development teams, ensuring technical constraints are understood and functional gaps are identified early.
- Data Analysis & Mapping: Perform gap analysis on databases and document business logic differences in mapping documents using SQL for data validation.
- Solution Design Support: Evaluate technical feasibility, participate in system architecture discussions, and ensure alignment with enterprise data standards.
- Agile Leadership: Participate actively in Scrum ceremonies, managing the product backlog and ensuring user stories meet the Definition of Ready.
- Quality Assurance: Assist in the development of test plans and scripts to ensure that the delivered API solutions meet the defined business requirements and performance benchmarks.
Technical Skills and Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess a strong foundation in the Java Ecosystem, including proficiency in Java 8+, Spring Boot, and microservices architecture to understand backend service logic. API Expertise is mandatory, specifically a strong understanding of RESTful APIs, JSON, XML, and security standards like OAuth 2.0 and JWT. Experience driving Agile ceremonies (Scrum/Kanban), backlog grooming, and sprint planning is essential. From a database perspective, hands-on experience with SQL (Oracle, PostgreSQL) and NoSQL (MongoDB) databases is required. Highly valued certifications include the IIBA’s CBAP or PMI-PBA.
