Role Overview

As a CNC Manufacturing Engineer in Sunnyvale, CA, you will play a pivotal role in moving surgical technology forward. This position is designed for a high-level technical expert who will serve as the primary commodity owner for CNC machining suppliers. You will be responsible for developing supplier capabilities, supporting Design for Manufacturability (DFM) during critical product launches, and driving continuous improvements across cost, capacity, quality, and risk management. This role requires a unique blend of technical engineering prowess and strategic supplier management skills to ensure that the most innovative medical products reach customers with the highest quality standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supplier Development & Commodity Ownership: Take full accountability for the CNC machining commodity, including supplier performance and technical maturity. Develop and execute strategic roadmaps that align with business objectives regarding cost and capacity.
  • DFM & NPI Support: Lead early supplier involvement during New Product Introduction (NPI) phases. Collaborate closely with design engineers to influence part design, tolerances, and materials, ensuring designs are optimized for scalable manufacturing.
  • Cost & Risk Management: Drive aggressive cost improvement initiatives using should-cost analysis and value engineering. Identify and mitigate supplier-related risks involving regulatory compliance and continuity of supply.
  • Project Management: Oversee complex supplier-related projects, including process changes and capacity expansions. Maintain detailed project plans and communicate status updates to key stakeholders with data-driven recommendations.
  • Technical Quality Support: Apply manufacturing core tools to support process maturity. Lead supplier audits and oversee process validations (IQ/OQ/PQ) and first article inspections (FAI) to ensure production readiness.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Bachelors degree in Manufacturing, Mechanical, or Industrial Engineering, or an equivalent technical field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant industry experience in CNC machining, supplier development, or manufacturing engineering.
  • Profound expertise in CNC machining processes within a high-precision production environment.
  • Advanced proficiency in blueprint reading and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Strong understanding of ISO-based quality systems, specifically ISO 13485 for medical devices.
  • Proven ability to make sound decisions under time constraints and manage ambiguous information in an R&D setting.

This is a 12+ month contract engagement located in the heart of Silicon Valley. The ideal candidate will thrive in a fast-paced, research-driven environment where innovation is the standard. You will interface with cross-functional teams including sourcing, design, and manufacturing to productize new designs that improve surgical outcomes for patients globally.


Special Requirements

US or GC ONLY; Local candidates preferred; Interview via MS Teams; Medical device manufacturing experience preferred.


Compensation & Location

Salary: $125,000 – $175,000 per year (Estimated)

Location: Sunnyvale, CA
