Role Overview: Senior API Architect
We are seeking a visionary Senior API Architect to lead the design, governance, and evolution of enterprise-grade API platforms within our State Enterprise Technology Division. This role is pivotal in driving a secure, scalable, and API-first architecture across a complex cloud and microservices ecosystem, specifically tailored for large-scale banking and financial systems. As we move into 2026, the demand for seamless integration and real-time data exchange has never been higher, and this position sits at the heart of that transformation.
Core Technical Responsibilities
- Architect and design robust, high-performance RESTful APIs and event-driven integration patterns using Java, Spring Boot, and Node.js.
- Establish and enforce API governance standards, including versioning strategies, documentation protocols (OpenAPI/Swagger), and lifecycle management.
- Lead the transition toward cloud-native architectures utilizing AWS, Kubernetes, and Docker to ensure high availability and elastic scalability.
- Implement advanced security frameworks including OAuth 2.0, JWT, and SAML to protect sensitive financial data and ensure regulatory compliance.
- Optimize CI/CD pipelines using GitHub, Jenkins, and Maven, integrating automated testing and security scanning (SonarQube) into the development workflow.
- Drive observability and performance monitoring initiatives using Splunk, AppDynamics, and Prometheus to maintain 99.99% uptime for critical services.
Strategic Leadership and Domain Expertise
Beyond technical implementation, the API Architect will serve as a subject matter expert in the banking domain. You will be responsible for aligning our API strategy with Open Banking standards and ISO 20022 messaging protocols. You will establish an API Center of Excellence (CoE) to mentor junior developers and promote best practices across the organization. This role requires a deep understanding of regulated environments, ensuring that every architectural decision meets stringent compliance and audit requirements. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate business requirements into technical blueprints that support core banking APIs, payment processing, and digital transformation initiatives.
Work Environment and Culture
This is a hybrid position based in Buffalo, New York, requiring three days of onsite collaboration and offering two days of remote flexibility. We believe that face-to-face interaction drives innovation, especially during complex architectural whiteboarding sessions. Our team is dedicated to continuous learning and staying ahead of the curve in the rapidly evolving fintech landscape. We offer a competitive contract duration of 6+ months with high potential for extension as we embark on multi-year modernization projects.
