Role Overview

The Lead Cobol Developer position in Lincoln, Nebraska, is a critical role within a high-stakes financial services environment. As a Contract-to-Hire (CTH) opportunity, this position offers a pathway to long-term stability within a leading organization. The successful candidate will be responsible for spearheading the development, maintenance, and optimization of core mainframe applications that power essential financial transactions. This role requires a blend of deep technical expertise and the ability to lead and mentor a team of developers in a fast-paced, challenging environment.

Technical Responsibilities

  • Design and develop robust applications using COBOL, CICS, JCL, VSAM, and DB2.
  • Utilize Assembler for low-level programming tasks where performance is paramount.
  • Leverage Intertest for comprehensive debugging and testing of mainframe code.
  • Manage complex data structures within VSAM and perform advanced SQL queries in DB2 environments.
  • Ensure high availability and performance of production systems through proactive monitoring and support.
  • Participate in on-call rotations to address critical production issues as they arise.

Leadership and Mentorship

  • Act as a technical lead, providing guidance and architectural oversight for complex projects.
  • Mentor junior and mid-level developers, fostering a culture of continuous learning and technical excellence.
  • Plan and deliver technical solutions that align with broader business objectives.
  • Answer technical and procedural questions, ensuring the team adheres to best practices and organizational standards.
  • Recommend strategic improvements for system applications to enhance efficiency and scalability.

Business and Domain Expertise

  • Apply deep knowledge of Credit/Debit and general financial domains to technical solutions.
  • Translate complex internal business processes into functional technical requirements.
  • Collaborate with business units to understand market trends and industry shifts affecting technology needs.
  • Work independently across various IT functional units to drive project success.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Minimum of 10 years of professional experience in Information Technology, specifically within mainframe environments.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM), or equivalent military/work experience.
  • Proven track record of working on moderate to complex projects within a functional area.
  • Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Detail-oriented mindset with the ability to multitask in a challenging, fast-paced environment.

Compensation & Location

Salary: $135,000 – $175,000 per year (Estimated)

Location: Lincoln, NE
