Role Overview

We are currently seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Scrum Master to join our dynamic team in Pittsburgh, PA. This is a hybrid role with a 6+ month contract duration, specifically designed for a professional who excels in Agile delivery and coaching. The primary focus of this position is to support a critical enterprise transition where legacy systems are being migrated to modern, distributed Java-based frameworks. This is a pure Scrum Master role, meaning there are no project management or business analyst responsibilities attached. We are looking for a servant leader who can guide teams through the complexities of evolving from Waterfall to Scrum methodologies.

Key Responsibilities and Expectations

  • Act as a champion for Agile and Scrum values, ensuring that teams remain customer-focused and high-performing.
  • Provide hands-on coaching to multiple cross-functional teams (typically 8-10 members each) to help them mature their Agile practices.
  • Facilitate all standard Scrum ceremonies, including Daily Stand-ups, Sprint Planning, Sprint Reviews, and Retrospectives, ensuring they are productive and time-boxed.
  • Guide teams in self-organization and taking full ownership of their work within the Scrum framework.
  • Proactively identify and remove impediments that hinder the team’s progress, escalating issues to leadership when necessary.
  • Foster a safe and transparent environment where team members feel comfortable raising issues and experimenting with new ideas.
  • Support the Product Owner in maintaining a healthy, prioritized, and transparent product backlog.
  • Drive continuous improvement by using metrics and retrospective feedback to implement measurable process enhancements.
  • Serve as a servant leader, focusing on enabling the team to deliver value rather than directing or assigning specific tasks.
  • Coach the broader organization on Agile adoption, helping to bridge the gap between traditional Waterfall mindsets and Agile delivery.

Technical Environment and Qualifications

  • A minimum of 2-5 years of experience serving as a dedicated Scrum Master for software development teams.
  • Proven experience in coaching teams through a Waterfall-to-Agile transition is essential.
  • Deep knowledge of Agile techniques such as User Stories, ATDD (Acceptance Test-Driven Development), TDD (Test-Driven Development), CI/CD, and Agile estimation.
  • Familiarity with various Agile frameworks beyond Scrum, including Kanban, XP (Extreme Programming), and Crystal.
  • Experience working with application development teams, particularly those using Java or mainframe technologies, is a significant advantage.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including facilitation, conflict resolution, and situational awareness.
  • A valid LinkedIn profile is a mandatory requirement for all applicants to verify professional history.

The Importance of Agile Coaching in Legacy Environments

Transitioning from legacy systems to modern Java-based frameworks is not just a technical challenge; it is a cultural one. As a Scrum Master in this environment, you will play a vital role in helping developers and stakeholders move away from rigid, long-term planning toward iterative delivery. This requires a high degree of emotional intelligence and the ability to manage resistance to change. You will be responsible for creating an atmosphere where failure is seen as a learning opportunity and where the team is empowered to make decisions that drive the project forward. Your success will be measured by the team’s ability to deliver high-quality software at a sustainable pace while maintaining a high level of engagement and morale.

Servant Leadership in Practice

In this role, you will embody the principles of servant leadership. This means putting the needs of the team first and helping them perform at their highest level. You will not be managing people in the traditional sense; instead, you will be removing the obstacles that prevent them from doing their best work. Whether it is resolving a conflict between team members, negotiating with a Product Owner over scope, or securing the resources the team needs, your focus will always be on the health and productivity of the Scrum team. This project offers a unique opportunity to practice pure Scrum in a high-stakes enterprise environment, making it an ideal role for a professional looking to deepen their Agile expertise.

Special Requirements
