Position Summary

We are seeking a highly experienced Workday HCM Payroll Specialist to join our team in Detroit, Michigan. This senior-level role requires a minimum of 12 years of professional experience, with a specific focus on the Workday HCM and Payroll modules within the Banking or Financial Services sector. The successful candidate will be responsible for the design, configuration, and maintenance of Workday Payroll solutions, ensuring compliance with industry regulations and organizational policies. This is a high-impact role that requires a blend of technical expertise, domain knowledge, and leadership capability to manage complex payroll operations for a major financial institution.

Core Responsibilities

  • Lead the implementation and optimization of Workday HCM and Payroll modules, ensuring alignment with business objectives and regulatory requirements.
  • Configure Workday Payroll components, including earnings, deductions, tax calculations, pay groups, and period schedules.
  • Conduct thorough testing of payroll processes, including unit testing, integration testing, and user acceptance testing (UAT) to ensure zero-defect payroll runs.
  • Provide expert-level support for payroll-related issues, troubleshooting complex configuration problems and data discrepancies in a timely manner.
  • Collaborate with HR, Finance, and Legal stakeholders to define requirements and translate them into scalable Workday solutions.
  • Ensure data integrity and security within the Workday system, adhering to strict financial and banking compliance standards such as SOX and GDPR.
  • Develop and maintain custom reports, calculated fields, and dashboards to provide actionable insights into payroll data and trends.
  • Manage Workday semi-annual releases and weekly updates, assessing the impact on payroll processes and implementing necessary changes.
  • Mentor junior team members and provide comprehensive training to end-users on Workday Payroll functionality and best practices.
  • Oversee third-party integrations between Workday and external vendors, such as benefit providers and tax authorities.

Required Qualifications

  • At least 12 years of experience in HRIS or Payroll systems, with a significant portion dedicated to Workday HCM and Payroll modules.
  • Extensive experience working within the Banking or Financial Services industry is mandatory to understand the specific regulatory landscape.
  • Deep knowledge of US payroll regulations, federal and state tax laws, and financial compliance requirements.
  • Proven ability to manage large-scale Workday implementations, migrations, or optimization projects from inception to completion.
  • Strong technical skills in Workday configuration, including calculated fields, EIBs, and advanced reporting.
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities and a meticulous attention to detail, especially regarding financial data.
  • Superior communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence decision-making at the executive level.
  • Must be a local candidate to the Detroit, MI area; relocation assistance is not provided for this role.

Project Management and Compliance

In this role, you will act as a subject matter expert (SME) for all payroll-related projects. You will be responsible for ensuring that all system changes are documented and comply with internal audit requirements. The Banking sector demands a high level of precision, and you will be expected to lead efforts in automating manual processes to reduce risk and increase efficiency. Your expertise will be vital during year-end processing and during any corporate restructuring events that impact the payroll architecture. You will work closely with the IT security team to maintain the highest standards of data privacy for employee information.

Compensation & Location

Salary: $145,000 – $195,000 per year (Estimated)
