Role Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled and hands-on Infrastructure Engineer for a critical 6-month onsite engagement in Milpitas, CA. This role is specifically designed for a professional who excels in the physical and logical layers of data center management, specifically focusing on rack and stack operations integrated with advanced Kubernetes orchestration. Unlike traditional cloud-focused roles, this position requires a deep understanding of physical server environments and the ability to manage hardware lifecycle alongside modern Infrastructure as Code (IaC) practices. The successful candidate will be responsible for the end-to-end deployment of physical infrastructure, ensuring that the hardware layer is perfectly optimized for containerized workloads. This is a unique opportunity to work in a high-density data center environment where your physical engineering skills are just as important as your software automation capabilities. You will be bridging the gap between the physical world of servers and the virtual world of container orchestration.
Key Responsibilities
- Execute physical data center operations including the installation, cabling, and configuration of server racks and networking equipment.
- Build, operate, and scale production-grade Kubernetes clusters directly on bare-metal physical servers.
- Implement and manage Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using tools like Terraform and Ansible to automate provisioning and configuration management.
- Monitor system health and cluster reliability, ensuring high availability for mission-critical applications.
- Manage storage provisioning and network connectivity within the data center environment.
- Perform routine maintenance, hardware upgrades, and troubleshooting of physical infrastructure components.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration between hardware and software layers.
- Develop and maintain detailed documentation of rack layouts, cabling diagrams, and cluster configurations.
- Optimize power and cooling efficiency within the assigned rack space.
- Participate in on-call rotations to address critical hardware or cluster failures.
Technical Requirements
- Proven experience with Kubernetes (K8s) administration in a non-cloud, physical server environment.
- Strong proficiency in Terraform and Ansible for infrastructure automation.
- Hands-on experience with network data center rack and stack procedures.
- Deep understanding of server hardware, storage systems, and physical networking.
- Ability to troubleshoot complex infrastructure issues across both hardware and software stacks.
- Experience with monitoring tools and cluster reliability engineering.
- Knowledge of Linux systems administration at a deep level.
- Familiarity with network protocols and hardware-level security configurations.
Work Environment and Physical Demands
This is a 100% onsite role located in Milpitas, California. Candidates must be comfortable working within a data center environment, which includes handling physical hardware, cabling, and working in a temperature-controlled server room. This position is not a remote or hybrid opportunity. We are specifically looking for a ‘boots on the ground’ engineer who can bridge the gap between physical hardware and modern container orchestration. If you are a Cloud Engineer who primarily works in AWS, Azure, or GCP without physical hardware experience, this role will not be a fit. The role requires physical stamina for moving equipment and precision for intricate cabling tasks. You will be the primary point of contact for the physical health of our Kubernetes environment in the Milpitas facility.
Why Join Us?
This project offers a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of physical infrastructure and cutting-edge orchestration technology. You will have the autonomy to build and scale clusters from the ground up on physical hardware, providing a level of control and performance optimization not found in public cloud environments. This 6-month contract provides a competitive compensation package and the chance to work with a dedicated team of infrastructure professionals in the heart of Silicon Valley. We value engineers who take pride in the craftsmanship of their physical builds as much as the elegance of their code. Join us to help define the future of on-premises high-performance computing.
Special Requirements
ONSITE ROLE; Rack/stack resource with Kubernetes experience; Not looking for a Cloud Engineer; 6 months duration.
