Position Overview: Senior SOX IT Controls Consultant

Hallmark Global Technologies, Inc. is seeking a highly experienced Senior SOX IT Controls Consultant for a critical 6-month engagement in San Jose, California. This onsite role is designed for a professional who excels in the intersection of information technology, risk management, and regulatory compliance. As organizations face increasingly complex digital landscapes in 2026, the necessity for robust internal controls has never been more paramount. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in safeguarding the integrity of our client’s financial reporting systems by ensuring that all IT General Controls (ITGC) are meticulously designed, implemented, and tested.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

  • Control Design and Architecture: You will be responsible for defining and designing internal controls for all in-scope SOX systems. This involves a deep dive into the architectural framework of various applications to ensure that control points are strategically placed to mitigate financial and operational risks.
  • Comprehensive Documentation: A significant portion of this role involves the preparation of high-quality requirement documents. You will create and maintain system diagrams, detailed control descriptions, and comprehensive Risk Control Matrices (RCM) that serve as the blueprint for the organization’s compliance posture.
  • Gap Analysis and Remediation: You will perform rigorous analysis of existing internal controls to determine their adequacy. When gaps are identified, you will provide expert guidance and lead the creation of new controls, ensuring they are integrated seamlessly into the existing business processes without causing undue friction.
  • Stakeholder Coordination: This role requires exceptional communication skills to coordinate ITGC and SOX-related activities. You will work closely with system owners, cross-functional control owners, internal auditors, and external audit partners to ensure a unified approach to compliance.
  • Audit Readiness: You will lead the preparation for internal and external audits, ensuring that all evidence is collected, organized, and ready for review. Your expertise will be vital in explaining complex technical controls to auditors and addressing any inquiries that arise during the testing phase.
  • Continuous Monitoring: Beyond periodic audits, you will establish processes for the continuous monitoring of control effectiveness, leveraging automated tools where possible to provide real-time insights into the compliance status of the IT environment.

Technical Qualifications and Experience

The ideal candidate will bring a minimum of 8-10 years of experience in IT audit, compliance, or risk management, with a specific focus on Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) Section 404 requirements. Proficiency in industry-standard frameworks such as COBIT, NIST, and ISO 27001 is essential. Given the 2026 technological landscape, experience with cloud-native environments (AWS, Azure, GCP) and automated compliance monitoring tools is highly desirable. Candidates should possess a strong understanding of IT infrastructure, including operating systems, databases, and network security, as well as application-level controls within major ERP systems like SAP or Oracle.

Professional Attributes

In addition to technical prowess, the Senior SOX IT Controls Consultant must demonstrate superior analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities. You should be able to navigate ambiguous situations and provide clear, actionable recommendations to senior leadership. The ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment is crucial. Professional certifications such as CISA (Certified Information Systems Auditor), CRISC (Certified in Risk and Information Systems Control), or CISSP (Certified Information Systems Security Professional) are strongly preferred and will be viewed as a testament to your commitment to the field.
