Role Overview
We are seeking a highly seasoned Mainframe Consultant with specialized expertise in SAS for a critical, long-term contract engagement based in Illinois. This hybrid role requires a professional with over 15 years of hands-on experience in the mainframe ecosystem, specifically focusing on large-scale enterprise application development, maintenance, and optimization. The successful candidate will be responsible for architecting and supporting complex systems that leverage legacy technologies alongside modern data processing tools.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain robust mainframe applications using COBOL and JCL to meet evolving business requirements.
- Utilize SAS for advanced data analysis, reporting, and processing within the mainframe environment, ensuring high performance and accuracy.
- Manage and optimize DB2 databases, including writing complex SQL queries and performing performance tuning.
- Work extensively with IMS DB/DC for transactional processing and database management.
- Handle data storage and retrieval using VSAM, ensuring data integrity and efficient access patterns.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate mainframe systems with distributed platforms.
- Provide expert-level troubleshooting and production support for mission-critical applications.
- Mentor junior developers and provide technical leadership on complex mainframe projects.
Technical Requirements
- Minimum of 15 years of professional experience in Mainframe development and consulting.
- Expert proficiency in COBOL, JCL, and SAS is mandatory.
- Strong hands-on experience with DB2 and IMS DB/DC.
- Deep understanding of VSAM and mainframe utilities.
- Proven track record of working in large-scale enterprise environments.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work in a hybrid model in Illinois.
Project Details
This is a 12-month contract with a high probability of extension. The project involves modernizing legacy data flows and enhancing reporting capabilities using SAS. Candidates must be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and possess the communication skills necessary to bridge the gap between technical implementation and business objectives. Special Requirements

Compensation & Location
Salary: $175,000 – $225,000 per year (Estimated)
