Position Summary

Sira Consulting is looking for a Senior Tomcat Engineer to join our infrastructure team in Dallas, Texas. This role, often referred to as a Senior Middleware Engineer, is critical for the design, installation, and optimization of Apache Tomcat within complex, clustered production environments. The ideal candidate will have a deep background in Linux infrastructures and a passion for high-availability systems. This is a 6-month contract with potential for extension, requiring onsite presence and flexibility for night shift rotations.

Core Responsibilities

  • Manage large-scale Apache Tomcat installations, including complex upgrades, security patching, and configuration management.
  • Optimize JVM performance, thread pools, and connector settings to ensure maximum throughput and minimal latency.
  • Conduct regular vulnerability management and security scans, implementing hardened configurations to protect enterprise data.
  • Analyze and troubleshoot complex service-level issues, identifying root causes in high-pressure production environments.
  • Collaborate with DevOps teams to integrate Tomcat with NGINX, Apache HTTPd, and various load balancers.
  • Automate routine maintenance and deployment tasks using advanced scripting and configuration management tools.
  • Deploy and support Tomcat applications within the Redhat Openshift container platform.
  • Create and manage DNS URLs and CNAME records for all respective instances.
  • Coordinate with Network teams to create Load Balancer (LB) requests and ensure proper traffic distribution.
  • Utilize Chef JSON files for infrastructure as code and manage Autosys jobs for automated server reboots.
  • Handle Y8 Certificate creations for DB2 and ensure all PSE PROD servers are in ‘Break Glass’ mode before Go-Live.

Technical Expertise

  • 6+ years of specialized experience in middleware platforms with a focus on Tomcat build and support.
  • Expert knowledge of RedHat Linux and containerization via OpenShift.
  • Proficiency in JVM tuning, memory management, and garbage collection optimization.
  • Experience with automation tools such as Chef and scheduling tools like Autosys.
  • Strong understanding of networking protocols, DNS, and Load Balancing (F5/NetScaler).
  • Familiarity with security protocols and certificate management (SSL/TLS).

Operational Requirements

  • Must be flexible to work on a rotational basis, including night shift coverage to support global operations.
  • Ability to work onsite at the Dallas, TX location.
  • Strong documentation skills for maintaining runbooks and architectural diagrams.
  • Proven ability to lead technical projects and mentor junior engineers.

Infrastructure and Automation

The role demands a proactive approach to infrastructure. You will be expected to not only maintain existing systems but to innovate through automation. By leveraging Chef and Autosys, you will reduce manual intervention and increase the reliability of our middleware stack. Your expertise in OpenShift will be vital as we continue to migrate legacy applications into modern containerized environments, ensuring that Tomcat instances are right-sized and performant.


Special Requirements

Onsite in Dallas, TX. 6-month duration. Rotational night shift coverage required.


Compensation & Location

Salary: $135,000 – $180,000 per year (Estimated)
