Overview of the Legal Business Analyst Role

This is an exciting opportunity for a highly skilled and experienced Legal Business Analyst to join a dynamic team, supporting critical legal operations and enterprise legal management (ELM) initiatives. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in platform migrations and process optimization efforts, ensuring that legal systems effectively meet the evolving needs of the organization. This long-term contract position is based onsite in Sunnyvale, CA, offering a chance to contribute significantly to the client’s legal technology landscape.

About the Role

We are actively seeking a dedicated Legal Business Analyst to bolster our client’s legal operations and enterprise legal management initiatives. This encompasses a broad range of responsibilities, including facilitating platform migrations and driving process optimization. The core focus of this role is to deeply understand complex legal workflows, meticulously gather business requirements from various stakeholders, and collaborate closely with both IT and legal teams. The ultimate goal is to deliver highly effective and tailored solutions across a variety of ELM platforms, such as TeamConnect, Litify, Passport, Onit, or other similar enterprise systems. The analyst will be instrumental in fostering collaboration across the organization, assessing requirements with precision, designing efficient workflows, providing robust support during platform transitions, and ensuring that all enterprise legal systems are aligned with and effectively address critical business needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead Requirement Gathering, Analysis, and Documentation: Take ownership of the entire requirements lifecycle for ELM platform migrations and subsequent enhancements. This involves conducting detailed interviews, workshops, and surveys to capture comprehensive business needs and translating them into clear, actionable documentation.
  • Define Future-State Workflows and Specifications: Proactively define and design optimized future-state workflows. This includes creating detailed process flows, developing comprehensive use cases, and drafting precise business specifications that guide system development and configuration.
  • Partner with Legal Operations, Counsel’s Office, and IT Teams: Act as a crucial liaison between legal operations, the counsel’s office, and IT teams. This involves translating complex business needs into practical system designs and effective workflow solutions, ensuring seamless communication and alignment across departments.
  • Support Design, Configuration, and Implementation: Actively participate in and support the design, configuration, and implementation phases of enterprise legal management systems. This includes contributing to system architecture discussions and ensuring configurations meet documented requirements.
  • Assist with User Acceptance Testing (UAT) and System Validation: Play a key role in User Acceptance Testing (UAT), meticulously tracking issues, and contributing significantly to system validation and overall deployment readiness. This ensures that the final product is robust and user-friendly.
  • Prepare Documentation and Reports for Leadership: Develop and present clear, concise documentation and reports for leadership. This includes providing regular status updates, conducting thorough risk assessments, and preparing comprehensive project summaries to keep stakeholders informed.
  • Support Operations of Deployed Systems: Provide ongoing support for deployed systems, covering critical areas such as eBilling, Intellectual Property (IP) portfolio management, matter management, and compliance workflows. This ensures the continuous smooth operation of legal systems.
  • Identify Opportunities for Process and System Optimization: Continuously seek out and identify opportunities for process and system optimization. The aim is to enhance overall efficiency and effectiveness within the legal operations framework.
  • Handle Confidential and Sensitive Legal Information: Exercise the utmost discretion and professionalism when handling confidential and sensitive legal information, adhering strictly to all data privacy and security protocols.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Business Analyst Experience: A minimum of 5-8 years of progressive experience as a Business Analyst, specifically within application development, process improvement, or system implementation projects. This foundational experience is critical for success in this role.
  • Legal Domain Experience: At least 1-2 years of direct experience within the legal domain, with a strong preference for candidates who have worked in legal operations or corporate legal teams. This ensures an understanding of the unique challenges and requirements of legal environments.
  • ELM Platform Familiarity: Demonstrated familiarity with leading Enterprise Legal Management (ELM) platforms such as TeamConnect, Litify, Passport, Onit, or other similar industry-standard systems.
  • Understanding of Legal Operations: A solid understanding of key legal operations areas, including Intellectual Property (IP) management, legal compliance frameworks, matter and case management processes, and eBilling and financial workflows.
  • Documentation and Communication Skills: Proven experience in documenting complex business processes, creating detailed requirements specifications, and effectively facilitating stakeholder alignment through strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.

Preferred Skills

  • Data Migration Project Exposure: Prior exposure to data migration projects or platform transition initiatives will be highly advantageous, demonstrating an ability to navigate complex system changes.
  • Agile/Scrum Methodologies: Knowledge and practical experience with Agile/Scrum methodologies, indicating an ability to work effectively in iterative development environments.
  • Emerging Trends Awareness: An awareness of emerging trends and innovations in enterprise legal management and legal operations, showcasing a commitment to continuous learning and staying current with industry advancements.

Compensation & Location

Salary: $100,000 – $140,000 per year (Estimated)
