Role Overview: Senior AI Engineer

We are currently seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior AI Engineer to join our team in the San Francisco Bay Area. This is a critical onsite position designed for a technical leader who can step into a team-lead capacity. The primary focus of this role is to support and enhance our personalization models and the broader corporate AI platform. As a senior-level contractor, you will be responsible for bridging the gap between high-level strategic decision-making and the day-to-day technical guidance required to keep our engineering teams moving forward during a transitional period. This role requires a unique blend of hands-on coding, architectural oversight, and people management skills to ensure the continuity of our most vital AI initiatives.

Key Responsibilities and Technical Leadership

  • Personalization Model Development: Lead the end-to-end development, improvement, and deployment of machine learning models. These models are the engine behind our personalized content delivery, promotional offers, and product recommendation systems.
  • Experimentation and Testing: Provide expert advice on model testing frameworks and A/B experimentation. You will ensure that all new model versions are rigorously evaluated for accuracy and business impact before they are rolled out to production.
  • Performance Optimization: Take ownership of model performance metrics, focusing on reliability, scalability, and response-time improvements to ensure a seamless user experience for millions of customers.
  • AI Platform Stewardship: Drive the continuous enhancement of our shared AI infrastructure. This includes managing complex data pipelines, model-serving interfaces, and comprehensive monitoring and observability tools.
  • Engineering Standards: Uphold and enforce high engineering standards and best practices across all teams utilizing the AI platform. You will act as a mentor and a gatekeeper for code quality and architectural integrity.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner closely with data engineering, product management, and various business stakeholders to ensure that the AI platform’s capabilities are perfectly aligned with the company’s strategic objectives.

Strategic Planning and Team Guidance

  • Technical Direction: Provide clear, actionable technical direction to a diverse group of engineers and data scientists. Your leadership will be vital in maintaining momentum on recommendation and personalization initiatives.
  • Documentation and Knowledge Management: Maintain meticulous documentation and organize technical materials. This ensures that ongoing work remains unblocked and that knowledge is effectively transferred across the organization.
  • Delivery Management: Make informed trade-off decisions that balance speed of delivery with model accuracy, system reliability, and overall business value.
  • SDLC Acceleration: Guide the team in adopting cutting-edge AI solutions to accelerate the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC), improving efficiency and reducing time-to-market for new features.
  • Mentorship: Act as a technical mentor to junior staff, fostering a culture of continuous learning and innovation within the AI engineering department.

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Production Experience: Extensive senior-level experience in building, deploying, and operating large-scale machine learning systems in a production environment.
  • Domain Expertise: A deep understanding of ranking models, recommendation systems, and the mathematical foundations of model evaluation and experiment design.
  • Technical Stack: Hands-on expertise with modern AI/ML tools, specifically Python, Spark, and cloud-based ML pipelines (AWS, GCP, or Azure). Proficiency in API design and cloud model-serving frameworks is essential.
  • Leadership Ability: Proven ability to lead complex engineering discussions, guide junior and mid-level team members, and provide a clear vision for technical projects.
  • Communication: Exceptional communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to translate intricate technical details into clear, actionable insights for non-technical partners and stakeholders.

This long-term contract offers a unique opportunity to influence the direction of a major AI platform in one of the world’s most vibrant tech hubs. If you are a strategic thinker with a passion for machine learning and a track record of technical leadership, we encourage you to apply. The role demands a high degree of autonomy and the ability to navigate complex organizational structures while delivering high-quality technical solutions.
