Metrix IT Solutions is currently seeking a seasoned Alation Subject Matter Expert (SME) to spearhead the deployment and strategic management of data cataloging solutions for a premier client based in Raritan, NJ. This role is designed for a visionary professional who understands that data is the lifeblood of the modern enterprise. The position offers a flexible remote work structure with occasional onsite requirements in Raritan, New Jersey, providing the perfect balance of autonomy and collaborative engagement. As the Alation SME, you will serve as the technical lead and strategic advisor for all matters related to the Alation platform, ensuring it serves as a single source of truth for data discovery and governance.
Detailed Responsibilities and Strategic Impact
- Platform Architecture and Configuration: You will be responsible for the end-to-end design, building, and configuration of Alation applications. This includes tailoring the platform to meet specific business process requirements and ensuring the functional architecture is scalable and resilient.
- Data Governance Leadership: Beyond technical configuration, you will design and implement comprehensive data governance operating models. This involves defining data ownership, stewardship roles, and accountability frameworks that ensure data integrity across the organization.
- Stakeholder Collaboration: You will act as a bridge between IT and business units. By collaborating with stakeholders, you will gather requirements for data cataloging and metadata management, translating these needs into actionable functional specifications within the Alation environment.
- Policy Development: Establish and enforce data policies and standards. You will ensure that all data assets are accurately categorized, tagged, and verified, fostering a culture of trust in the organization’s data assets.
- Adoption and Literacy: A tool is only as good as its users. You will develop and lead training programs and onboarding materials for data stewards and business users, driving high adoption rates and enhancing overall data literacy within the company.
- Continuous Optimization: Monitor platform performance and implement Alation best practices. You will proactively recommend and execute improvements to the catalog to keep pace with evolving data landscapes.

- Professional Experience: Candidates must possess over 10 years of experience in the broader fields of data governance, data cataloging, or data management.
- Alation Expertise: A minimum of 5 years of dedicated, hands-on experience with the Alation platform is mandatory. This includes experience with Alation’s core components and functional architecture.
- Technical Toolkit: Proficiency in SQL is essential. You should also have experience with scripting languages such as Python, Shell, or Java to facilitate automation and troubleshooting within the data environment.
- Data Ecosystem Knowledge: Strong familiarity with relational databases, ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) tools, and modern data warehouse environments (e.g., Snowflake, Redshift, or BigQuery).
- Secondary Tools: While Alation is the primary focus, experience with complementary tools like Collibra, Informatica, or similar data governance suites is considered a significant advantage.
Soft Skills and Communication
- Stakeholder Management: You must possess excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to manage expectations and communicate complex technical information to non-technical business leaders.
- Strategic Thinking: The ability to align technical implementations with broader corporate data strategies and governance frameworks.
- Problem Solving: A proactive approach to identifying bottlenecks in data workflows and implementing technical solutions to resolve them.
