Role Overview and Strategic Impact

The Applications Support Lead is a high-level strategic position responsible for the comprehensive management of the enterprise application lifecycle. This role is designed for a professional who can bridge the gap between complex technical engineering and high-level business objectives. You will be tasked with guiding application strategy, modernization planning, and portfolio optimization to ensure that all software assets align with organizational priorities and deliver measurable business outcomes. The Applications Services Manager serves as a strategic leader with deep technical fluency, capable of managing risk and ensuring the long-term sustainability, security, and reliability of business-critical applications. While not a hands-on developer, the role requires sufficient technical depth to effectively oversee engineering teams and assess architectural decisions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Application Portfolio Management: You will oversee an enterprise application portfolio supporting critical business functions. This includes establishing governance for the application lifecycle, performing health assessments, and leading rationalization efforts to consolidate or retire legacy systems.
  • Lifecycle Planning and Strategy: You will develop strategic roadmaps addressing sustainment, upgrades, and modernization. By evaluating technical debt and obsolescence risks, you will provide data-driven insights to support informed investment decisions and coordinate planning across vendors and stakeholders.
  • Technical Oversight: You will provide oversight into development, configuration, integration, and production support. Reviewing technical designs and upgrade strategies is essential to ensure stability and maintainability. You will also guide technical staff during complex incidents and high-risk changes.
  • Work Tracking and Metrics: Establishing formal mechanisms to track staff and vendor work is a core duty. You will utilize dashboards and reporting tools like Power BI to provide visibility into work progress and deliver weekly executive-level reports on application health and resource utilization.
  • Vendor and Financial Management: You will oversee vendor relationships, lead contract renewals, and manage operational budgets related to application modernization. Coordinating with finance and procurement on funding strategies is a key part of the role.
  • Governance and Compliance: Serving as a liaison for disaster recovery and audit activities, you will ensure applications meet continuity requirements and security standards.

Qualifications and Leadership

Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field and at least six years of experience in maintaining technical systems. Preferred candidates will have over 10 years of experience in application upgrades and deployment, with specific expertise in portfolio rationalization and lifecycle governance. The role requires a leader who can represent departmental interests in steering committees and cross-functional discussions, providing informed input to support decision-making and prioritization. This position is 100% on-site in Phoenix, AZ, requiring local residency and the ability to participate in face-to-face strategic meetings.
