Job ID: JOB_ID_8425

Role: AS400 Admin

We are seeking an experienced AS400 Administrator with a strong background in database management, specifically focusing on DB2 internals, locking analysis, logging, and monitoring. This is a long-term, fully remote position.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform deep dives into DB2 engine internals, including locking, blocking, isolation levels, and transaction behavior.
  • Configure logging, auditing, and event tracing to capture lock owners (user/session IDs), programs, or jobs initiating locks, and SQL statements/transaction context.
  • Set up monitoring for table locks and blocking chains, including proactive capture of diagnostic data.
  • Utilize enterprise monitoring tools (LogicMonitor expertise is a plus) to track database performance.
  • Design and implement custom logging, instrumentation, and automation to address recurring or high-impact database issues.
  • Conduct performance diagnostics and optimization without requiring query rewrites.
  • Run and interpret performance traces, query execution plans, wait-time and resource-consumption statistics, and query snapshots.
  • Identify inefficient query patterns, index gaps, unused indexes, and suboptimal indexing strategies.
  • Analyze configuration issues affecting CPU, memory, IO, or buffer pool performance.
  • Recommend indexing improvements, configuration, and resource tuning, as well as schema-level optimizations.
  • Collaborate effectively during troubleshooting, providing clear diagnostics and evidence to application developers.
  • Perform performance baselining, capacity assessments, and recurring environment health reviews.
  • Build and maintain performance baselines and track deviations over time.
  • Implement alerts for performance regressions, shifts in workload or access patterns, increasing lock contention or blocking, and index health degradation.
  • Automate trend analysis across resource utilization (CPU, memory, IO), query runtime metrics, index efficiency and fragmentation, and storage/filesystem behaviors relevant to DB2.

Essential Skills:

  • Core Skills: Locking Analysis, Logging & Monitoring
  • Deep understanding of DB2 engine internals, including locking, blocking, isolation levels, and transaction behavior.
  • Ability to configure logging, auditing, and event tracing to capture Lock owners (users/session IDs), Programs or jobs initiating locks, SQL statements and transaction context.
  • Skilled in setting up monitoring for table locks and blocking chains, including proactive capture of diagnostic data.
  • Experience with enterprise monitoring tools (LogicMonitor expertise is a plus).
  • Ability to design custom logging, instrumentation, and automation to address recurring or high-impact database issues.
  • Performance Diagnostics & Optimization (Without Query Rewrites)
  • Proficient in running and interpreting Performance traces, Query execution plans, Wait-time and resource-consumption statistics, Query snapshots and top-N consumer analysis.
  • Ability to identify Inefficient query patterns (diagnosis only), Index gaps, unused indexes, and suboptimal indexing strategies, Configuration issues affecting CPU, memory, IO, or bufferpool performance.
  • Capable of recommending Indexing improvements, Configuration and resource tuning, Schema-level optimizations.
  • Strong collaborator during troubleshooting, providing clear diagnostics and evidence to application developers without requiring ongoing pairing.
  • Comfortable performing performance baselining, capacity assessments, and recurring environment health reviews.
  • Monitoring, Alerting & Performance Regression Detection
  • Ability to build and maintain performance baselines and track deviations over time.
  • Experience implementing alerts for Performance regressions, Shifts in workload or access patterns, Increasing lock contention or blocking, Index health degradation.
  • Ability to automate trend analysis across Resource utilization (CPU, memory, IO), Query runtime metrics, Index efficiency and fragmentation, Storage and filesystem behaviors relevant to DB2.

Additional Valuable Skills:

  • Experience integrating monitoring and alerting with enterprise tooling such as LogicMonitor, Ignio, or ServiceNow.
  • Knowledge of HADR architectures, including HADR, cluster manager integration, replication behaviors, and failover workflows.
  • Familiarity with cloud database platforms (Azure SQL, PostgreSQL PaaS, MySQL PaaS) and hybrid environments.
  • Solid understanding of application-to-database interaction patterns, including connection management, workload characteristics, and transaction design impacts.

Desirable Skills:

  • Database

Experience Required:

  • 10+ years of experience in AS400 Administration and DB2.
