Role Overview

DatamanUSA is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Azure Data Engineer for a long-term, 60-month contract with our direct client, the State of Mississippi – Department of Education. This is a fully remote position focused on modernizing and maintaining critical education data systems. The successful candidate will be responsible for the design, implementation, and optimization of robust data pipelines within the Azure ecosystem, specifically leveraging Synapse Analytics to support the Mississippi Student Information System (MSIS) and related educational reporting frameworks.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain sophisticated Azure-based data pipelines using Azure Synapse Analytics and Azure Data Factory.
  • Develop and optimize complex ETL/ELT processes to facilitate the ingestion, transformation, and validation of K-12 education data from a variety of disparate source systems.
  • Implement and manage comprehensive data models, views, and performance tuning strategies within Azure SQL and Synapse environments to ensure high availability and speed.
  • Monitor, troubleshoot, and resolve critical data pipeline failures and performance bottlenecks in real-time.
  • Document all data flows, transformation logic, and technical standards to maintain a high level of transparency and system integrity.
  • Collaborate closely with data analysts, reporting teams, and external vendors to ensure the delivery of timely and accurate data for federal and state compliance reporting.
  • Utilize Azure DevOps and Git for version control and CI/CD pipeline management.

Required Technical Qualifications

  • A minimum of 5 years of professional experience in cloud-based data engineering.
  • Advanced expertise in the development and orchestration of data pipelines using Azure Data Factory or Synapse (including triggers, integration runtimes, and parameterization).
  • Proven experience in data warehousing and analytics engineering using Azure Synapse Analytics (both dedicated and serverless SQL pools).
  • Expert-level T-SQL skills, including deep knowledge of query optimization, indexing strategies, and stored procedures.
  • Hands-on experience implementing ETL/ELT frameworks, including incremental loading, Change Data Capture (CDC) patterns, and advanced error handling.
  • Experience integrating structured and semi-structured data formats such as CSV, JSON, and XML from APIs, SFTP, and vendor systems.
  • Proficiency in source control and deployment practices using Azure DevOps and Git.

Preferred Skills and Certifications

  • Direct experience with Student Information Management Systems (SIS) and K-12 data reporting requirements.
  • Familiarity with Common Education Data Standards (CEDS).
  • Active Azure Data Engineer Associate certification.
  • Previous experience working with state or local government agencies on large-scale data migration projects.

Domain restriction: Experience with Department of Education or K-12 data preferred. Long-term 60+ month contract duration.


Compensation & Location

Salary: $145,000 – $195,000 per year (Estimated)
