Position Overview: Azure Data and Identity Engineer

We are seeking an experienced Azure Data Engineer with a specialized focus on Identity and Access Management (IAM) to join our infrastructure team in Waltham, MA. This is a long-term contract position that requires an onsite presence. In the evolving landscape of 2026, securing and managing cloud identities is paramount. This role is designed for a professional who excels in managing complex Azure AD environments, ensuring seamless synchronization between on-premises and cloud directories, and maintaining high availability for critical authentication services.

Detailed Responsibilities

  • Azure AD Connect Management: You will be the primary point of contact for Azure AD Connect (AADC). This involves configuring synchronization policies, creating and modifying sync rules, and ensuring that identity data is accurately reflected across the hybrid environment.
  • ADFS and WAP Administration: You will manage Active Directory Federation Services (ADFS) and Web Application Proxy (WAP) setups. This includes handling DR (Disaster Recovery) configurations, metadata updates, and the lifecycle management of certificates.
  • Single Sign-On (SSO) Integration: You will lead the integration and registration of enterprise applications for SSO in Azure. This includes managing client secrets, certificates, and ensuring that service principals are correctly configured for secure access.
  • Identity Security and Auditing: You will work closely with the security team to provide necessary Azure AD information for audits. You will also be responsible for managing OU structures and policies within the Azure AD Domain Services (AADDS) environment.
  • Monitoring and Troubleshooting: Utilizing the Azure Active Directory Connect Health portal, you will monitor sync alerts, performance metrics, and usage analytics. You will be expected to take immediate action on email alerts related to AADC sync issues to prevent service disruptions.
  • Hybrid Infrastructure Support: You will provide hands-on support for on-premises Active Directory, including Group Policy (GPO) troubleshooting and AD replication management.

Technical Qualifications

  • Experience: A minimum of 6-8 years of experience in IT infrastructure, with at least 4 years focused specifically on Azure identity services.
  • Azure Expertise: Deep knowledge of Azure AD, Azure AD Connect, ADFS, and Azure SSO. Familiarity with Azure AD Domain Services (AADDS) is highly desirable.
  • Active Directory: Strong proficiency in on-premises Active Directory administration, including forest/domain management, GPOs, and DNS.
  • Security: Solid understanding of modern security protocols, including OAuth2, SAML, and OpenID Connect. Experience with certificate management and secret rotation is essential.
  • Disaster Recovery: Proven experience in planning and executing disaster recovery for identity infrastructure.
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to document complex configurations and provide clear status updates to management.

The Strategic Importance of this Role in 2026

As organizations continue to embrace multi-cloud and hybrid-cloud strategies in 2026, the role of the Identity Engineer has become more strategic than ever. You will not only be maintaining systems but also advising on best practices for directory synchronization and SSO for Azure and Office 365 services.
