Role Overview
The Cockroach DBA role is a critical position within our infrastructure team, focusing on the next generation of distributed database technology. As organizations move toward global scale and cloud-native architectures, the need for robust, distributed SQL databases like CockroachDB has become paramount. This role requires a candidate who not only understands traditional RDBMS concepts but is also deeply familiar with the nuances of distributed systems, consensus algorithms (like Raft), and multi-region data distribution. In this capacity, you will be the primary architect and operator of our CockroachDB environment. Your day-to-day activities will involve the design and deployment of clusters across multiple geographic regions to ensure that our applications remain resilient even in the face of entire region outages. You will be tasked with maintaining the delicate balance of data consistency and performance, ensuring that our global user base experiences minimal latency.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, deploy, operate, and scale multi-region CockroachDB clusters in production environments.
- Ensure high availability, fault tolerance, and data consistency for globally distributed clusters.
- Monitor cluster health, latency, replication status, and resource utilization using observability tools.
- Perform capacity planning and proactive scaling for future growth.
- Troubleshoot complex database and infrastructure issues including node failures and network partitions.
- Manage leaseholder and range imbalance, replication lag, and hotspotting.
- Address high latency and throughput bottlenecks.
- Design disaster recovery strategies including multi-region backup/restore and failover/fallback.
- Implement and test backup, restore, and point-in-time recovery processes.
- Automate provisioning, scaling, patching, and upgrades of CRDB clusters.
- Perform rolling upgrades with zero or near-zero downtime.
- Optimize SQL query performance and database schema efficiency.
- Create operational runbooks, SOPs, and on-call playbooks for CRDB.
- Participate in on-call rotations and incident response for production clusters.
Technical Environment and Requirements
The candidate must also possess a deep understanding of Linux systems administration, as CockroachDB performance is heavily dependent on the underlying operating system and hardware configuration. Experience with containerization technologies like Docker and orchestration platforms like Kubernetes is highly desirable, as many of our clusters are deployed in cloud-native environments. You will be expected to collaborate with DevOps teams to integrate database deployments into CI/CD pipelines, ensuring that schema changes and infrastructure updates are handled with the same level of rigor as application code. Strong communication skills are essential, as you will be working with cross-functional teams to solve complex problems and drive architectural decisions that will impact the long-term scalability of our platform. Understanding how CockroachDB handles leaseholders and range distribution is vital for maintaining a balanced and high-performing cluster. You will also be responsible for identifying and mitigating hotspots—areas where specific ranges are receiving disproportionate traffic—and optimizing SQL queries to ensure they are executed efficiently across the distributed nodes.

Local to Sunnyvale CA and Austin TX; Contract role; 10+ years experience required.
Compensation & Location
Salary: $165,000 – $215,000 per year (Estimated)
