Role Overview

The Data Governance Lead is a strategic leadership position responsible for building and directing a comprehensive data governance program. In the fast-paced retail and e-commerce sector of 2026, data is the lifeblood of the organization. This role ensures that data is trusted, accurate, and well-understood across all business units. You will establish the standards, ownership models, and accountability frameworks needed to ensure data reliability and responsible use at scale. This is a hybrid role based in New York City, requiring a blend of remote focus and in-person collaboration with key stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Program Leadership: You will design and implement a robust data governance strategy that aligns with the organization’s digital transformation goals. This includes defining the governance roadmap and securing buy-in from executive leadership.
  • Data Stewardship: Partner closely with business leaders, product teams, and technology departments to define data ownership and stewardship roles. You will ensure that every critical data asset has a clear owner and defined quality standards.
  • Metadata and Lineage: You will oversee the implementation of metadata management and data lineage tools to provide transparency into how data flows through the organization, from source systems to advanced analytics and AI models.
  • Data Quality Management: Establish and monitor data quality metrics. You will lead remediation efforts when data quality issues are identified, ensuring that business decisions are based on reliable information.
  • AI and ML Governance: As the organization scales its use of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, you will develop governance frameworks specifically for AI training data, ensuring ethical use and compliance with emerging regulations.
  • Regulatory Alignment: Ensure that all data governance practices are in full compliance with GDPR, CCPA, and other relevant data privacy laws.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Experience: You must have 5+ years of proven experience in data governance, data management, or analytics leadership roles within complex, data-driven organizations.
  • Industry Knowledge: Experience in retail, e-commerce, or consumer-facing industries is highly preferred, as you will need to understand the specific data challenges of high-volume transaction environments.
  • Technical Expertise: Strong understanding of modern cloud data platforms (e.g., Snowflake, Databricks) and data cataloging tools (e.g., Collibra, Alation).
  • Communication: Exceptional ability to translate complex technical data concepts into actionable guidance for non-technical business audiences. You must be a persuasive communicator capable of driving cultural change.
  • Education: A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Data Science, Information Management, or a related field is expected.

Strategic Impact

By establishing a culture of data accountability, you will empower the organization to use data as a strategic asset. Your work will directly impact customer experiences, operational efficiency, and the success of our AI initiatives. In this role, you are not just managing data; you are enabling the future of retail through trusted information.

Special Requirements
