Role Overview: Mainframe System Administration

The IBM IMS & Db2 for z/OS System Administrator is a specialized server-side role focused on the foundational infrastructure of the mainframe environment. Unlike application-level DBAs, this position is dedicated to the installation, configuration, and maintenance of the subsystems themselves. The successful candidate will ensure the high availability, performance, and recoverability of IMS DB/TM and Db2 for z/OS, which are critical to the organization’s core processing capabilities. This remote position requires a high degree of self-motivation and technical expertise, as the administrator will be responsible for managing complex Sysplex environments and ensuring tight integration with z/OS services such as RACF, WLM, and JES2.

Core Responsibilities and Technical Ownership

  • Execute the installation and maintenance of IBM software products using SMP/E, ensuring that all subsystems are updated with the latest patches and features.
  • Configure IMS and Db2 subsystems for optimal performance, managing parameters in PARMLIB and PROCLIB to align with organizational standards.
  • Implement and manage Parallel Sysplex and Coupling Facility services to provide high availability and workload balancing across the mainframe complex.
  • Monitor system health and performance using advanced tools such as OMEGAMON or MainView, analyzing RMF and SMF data to identify bottlenecks.
  • Manage the security landscape of the database subsystems by configuring RACF profiles and ensuring compliance with corporate security policies.
  • Develop and maintain automation scripts using REXX, CLIST, and JCL to streamline repetitive administrative tasks and reduce the risk of human error.
  • Oversee backup and recovery operations, including the management of IMS RECON, DBRC, and Db2 BSDS/logs to ensure disaster recovery readiness.
  • Collaborate with network teams to manage TCP/IP and VTAM connectivity, ensuring that DDF and other communication protocols are functioning correctly.
  • Utilize modern mainframe management tools like z/OSMF and Unix System Services (USS) to enhance administrative efficiency.

Strategic Importance and Professional Requirements

With over 10 years of experience in z/OS system programming, the candidate will act as a subject matter expert for all things related to IMS and Db2 infrastructure. This role is vital for maintaining the stability of the server-side environment, which supports thousands of concurrent transactions and massive data processing tasks. The administrator must possess a deep understanding of the internal workings of the mainframe, from the hardware level up through the operating system and into the database subsystems. By ensuring that these systems are robust, secure, and performant, the System Administrator enables the organization to meet its service level agreements and provide reliable services to its customers. This role is a perfect fit for a technical professional who enjoys the challenges of low-level system programming and wants to work at the heart of enterprise computing.

Special Requirements

Remote; Pure server-side system programming focus.
