Role Overview
Virginia State University’s Information Technology Services (ITS) department is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated IT Governance and Compliance Analyst with a specialized focus on Artificial Intelligence (AI). This pivotal role is designed to strengthen institutional compliance and technology oversight within a dynamic higher education environment. As AI continues to reshape the academic landscape, this position ensures that technology practices remain aligned with academic integrity, regulatory requirements, and the university’s core mission of supporting student success and institutional efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
- Higher Education Governance: Maintain and evolve IT governance frameworks that effectively support academic, research, and administrative operations across the university ecosystem.
- Regulatory Compliance: Actively monitor and enforce strict compliance with federal and state regulations, including FERPA, HIPAA, and other critical security standards relevant to higher education.
- AI Audit & Documentation: Coordinate complex AI collaborations and prepare comprehensive documentation for both internal and external audits, ensuring accreditation-related technology compliance is met.
- Policy Development: Lead the development and coordination of AI-related updates to institutional policies, standards, and guidelines, specifically focusing on data privacy, cybersecurity, and the ethical use of technology.
- Security Awareness: Leverage AI tools to monitor and enhance compliance with security awareness programs designed for faculty, staff, and students.
- Continuous Improvement: Stay at the forefront of emerging AI governance regulations and global compliance best practices to provide strategic recommendations for process improvements.
Technical Requirements and Qualifications
- Framework Expertise: Deep familiarity with governance frameworks such as COBIT and ITIL, alongside compliance standards including NIST and ISO.
- Domain Knowledge: Comprehensive understanding of higher education systems, including Learning Management Systems (LMS), Student Information Systems (SIS), and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) platforms.
- AI Data Privacy: Specialized knowledge in AI data privacy requirements and the ethical implications of machine learning in a public sector context.
- Analytical Prowess: Proven ability to interpret complex compliance requirements for AI and translate them into actionable strategies for academic and administrative contexts.
- Communication: Exceptional ability to engage and influence faculty, senior administrators, and technical teams regarding AI compliance initiatives.
Experience and Education
Candidates must possess between 5 to 10 years of professional experience in IT governance, risk management, or compliance roles. Specific experience with AI Governance and Compliance within a higher education or heavily regulated environment is highly preferred. A Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Business Administration, or a related field is required to ensure the candidate has the foundational knowledge necessary for this senior-level oversight role. This position requires a professional who can balance the need for innovation with the necessity of risk mitigation.
Work Environment and Special Requirements
This is a hybrid position based in South Chesterfield, VA. The selected candidate will be expected to work primarily onsite with the flexibility of two days per week for remote work. Reporting directly to the Director of IT Governance, Risk & Compliance, the analyst will play a key role in the strategic direction of the department. Compensation & Location
Salary: $125,000 – $165,000 per year (Estimated)
