Job Title: Kong API Gateway Architect
We are seeking a highly experienced Kong API Gateway Architect to join our team. This role is crucial for owning the end-to-end architecture of our Kong Konnect and Kong Gateway solutions across on-premise and GCP environments. You will lead architectural reviews, define target architectures, and ensure robust security, high availability, disaster recovery, observability, and performance-scalability designs.
Key Responsibilities:
- Own end-to-end architecture for Kong Konnect and Kong Gateway (Control Plane Data Plane) across on-premise and GCP.
- Lead Architecture Review Board (ARB) reviews, focusing on target architecture, security, High Availability/Disaster Recovery (HADR), observability, and performance-scalability design.
- Define API governance standards, promote a design-first approach, and manage the API lifecycle in collaboration with Security, Network, Infrastructure, and Product teams.
Mandatory Skill Requirements:
- 10 years of experience in integration and API architecture, with at least 2 enterprise API gateway programs.
- Deep expertise in Kong Konnect Gateway architecture, including decK, declarative configuration, workspaces, and Role-Based Access Control (RBAC).
- Proficiency in security patterns such as mTLS, OAuth2/OIDC, JWT, API keys, rate limiting, Web Application Firewall (WAF), and secrets/certificate management.
- Strong understanding of cloud and on-premise GCP environments (VPC, load balancing), Linux, and fundamental networking concepts.
- Experience with observability integrations (e.g., Dynatrace, logging) and audit/compliance controls.
- Solid knowledge of CI/CD and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) principles (Git, Git branching, Terraform pipelines).
- Experience with GCP platform, Terraform, GKE/Kubernetes, and shell scripting.
Good to Have Technical Skills:
- Experience with Apigee to Kong migration programs and multi-organization/multi-region topologies.
- Familiarity with Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), Chaos Engineering, and resiliency patterns, including service mesh technologies like Istio or Linkerd.
- Experience in cost and performance optimization, and capacity sizing for high-throughput (TPS) gateways.
Role Description:
This is an on-site role in Atlanta, GA, requiring a minimum commitment of 6+ months. The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience in designing, implementing, and managing complex API gateway solutions, with a strong focus on Kong technologies and cloud-native architectures on GCP.
