Position Overview
We are currently looking for a Senior Linux on Z Engineer to join our specialized mainframe systems team in a fully remote capacity. This is an urgent requirement where the hiring manager is prepared to conduct interviews and extend an offer as early as next week. The ideal candidate will possess a rare blend of traditional mainframe expertise and modern Linux systems administration, specifically focusing on the IBM Z platform (z15 and z16). This role is pivotal in maintaining the stability, security, and compliance of our mainframe-hosted Linux environments. As organizations continue to modernize their mainframe workloads, your expertise in Linux on Z will be critical in ensuring that these high-performance systems meet the rigorous demands of modern enterprise applications while maintaining the legendary reliability of the IBM Z architecture.
Core Responsibilities
- Administer and maintain complex Linux on Z, z/VM, and KVM environments running on IBM Z15 and Z16 mainframes.
- Execute system configuration, patching, and security remediation tasks in strict alignment with Enterprise Systems Security (ESS) controls.
- Manage connectivity and configuration for high-end storage solutions, including IBM DS8K and FlashSystem.
- Oversee Brocade SAN switch operations and HMC (Hardware Management Console) configurations.
- Collaborate closely with Security Operations Engineers to plan and execute remediation tasks, ensuring all compliance evidence is meticulously documented.
- Perform deep-dive root-cause analysis for any issues impacting system performance or compliance status.
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and technical documentation.
- Implement automated monitoring and alerting for the Linux on Z environment to ensure proactive issue resolution.
- Support system hardening and access management activities to maintain a zero-trust security posture.
- Participate in disaster recovery planning and testing for mainframe-hosted Linux workloads.
Technical Qualifications
- Minimum of 5 years of professional experience as a Linux Systems Engineer or Mainframe Systems Administrator.
- Extensive hands-on experience with IBM Z platforms, specifically Linux on Z and z/VM virtualization.
- Proficiency in KVM on RHEL and a strong understanding of mainframe virtualization concepts.
- Advanced scripting skills in Bash, Python, or Ansible for automation and system management.
- Familiarity with IBM DS8K/FlashSystem storage and Brocade SAN environments.
- Strong understanding of compliance-driven IT environments and formal change control processes.
- Experience with IBM HMC for system management and logical partitioning (LPAR) configuration.
- Knowledge of networking concepts as they apply to the IBM Z environment, including HiperSockets and OSA adapters.
Soft Skills and Collaboration
As a remote engineer, excellent communication and collaboration skills are paramount. You will be expected to interact with various stakeholders across different time zones, providing clear updates and technical insights. The ability to work independently while remaining a cohesive part of the larger infrastructure team is essential. We value proactive problem-solvers who can anticipate potential compliance gaps and address them before they become critical issues. Your ability to translate complex mainframe concepts for non-mainframe teams will be a significant asset in our integrated IT environment.
Remote Work and Benefits
This position offers the flexibility of 100% remote work, allowing you to contribute to a high-impact environment from anywhere in the United States. You will be working with some of the most advanced mainframe technology in the industry, supporting a robust and secure infrastructure. Given the urgency of this hire, we are looking for candidates who are ready to hit the ground running and make an immediate impact on our systems’ reliability and security posture. This role provides a unique opportunity to work at the forefront of mainframe modernization, bridging the gap between legacy stability and modern open-source flexibility.
