Role Overview: Mainframe COBOL Developer
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Mainframe COBOL Developer for a critical 6-month contract engagement based in Edison, New Jersey. This position follows a hybrid work model, requiring the consultant to be onsite at the Edison facility at least three days per week. As a Senior Developer, you will be responsible for the design, development, and optimization of complex mainframe applications within the Life Insurance domain. This role requires a deep understanding of legacy systems and the ability to integrate them with modern business processes.
Key Responsibilities and Technical Requirements
- COBOL Programming: Perform advanced programming, maintenance, and performance optimization of COBOL applications. You will be expected to handle complex business logic and ensure high availability of core systems.
- JCL & Batch Processing: Manage complex job streams using JCL. Expertise in SORT, IDCAMS, and automated scheduling is essential for maintaining efficient batch processing cycles.
- Database Management (DB2): Write and optimize SQL queries, develop stored procedures, and perform performance tuning to ensure efficient data retrieval and storage.
- Transaction Processing (CICS): Design and maintain CICS transactions and BMS maps to support real-time online processing.
- Data Storage (VSAM): Handle dataset design, recovery, and management within VSAM environments.
- Debugging & Tooling: Utilize industry-standard tools such as Abend-AID, Xpediter, and File-AID for rapid troubleshooting and resolution of production issues. Experience with schedulers like CA7 or Control-M is highly preferred.
Domain and Soft Skills
Candidates must possess significant experience within the Life Insurance domain. Understanding the nuances of policy administration, claims processing, and actuarial data structures is vital for success in this role. Furthermore, the ideal candidate will have a strong grasp of the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) and experience working in Agile environments. Excellent communication skills are required as you will collaborate with cross-functional teams, including business analysts and system architects, to deliver high-quality technical solutions.
Interview and Location Constraints
Please note that this position is strictly for local candidates in the New Jersey area. A Face-to-Face (F2F) interview is a mandatory part of the screening process; therefore, candidates must be willing and able to travel to the client site for interviews without relocation assistance. This is a 6+ month duration contract with the potential for extension based on project needs and individual performance.

Compensation & Location
Salary: $125,000 – $165,000 per year (Estimated)
