As we move through 2026, the intersection of traditional mainframe stability and modern Java agility has become a cornerstone of financial and administrative infrastructure. This role requires a developer who is equally comfortable navigating COBOL environments and implementing modern Java-based services to ensure seamless data flow and application performance. You will be a key player in digital transformation initiatives, helping to bridge the gap between legacy reliability and modern cloud-native flexibility.
Core Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and optimize high-performance mainframe applications using COBOL, JCL, DB2, and CICS.
- Implement and maintain Java-based components that interface with legacy mainframe systems for modern service delivery.
- Lead data migration projects, moving critical information from legacy platforms to modernized cloud-native environments without service interruption.
- Utilize industry-standard mainframe tools such as Xpeditor, Fileaid, Abend-AID, Endevor, and Platinum for debugging and version control.
- Analyze existing mainframe codebases to identify bottlenecks and recommend architectural improvements for better performance.
- Partner with Enterprise Architects and Design Leads to define data sourcing strategies and integration patterns for hybrid environments.
- Execute rigorous local testing and support end-to-end business integration testing (BIT) to ensure system stability.
- Manage the deployment lifecycle across development, staging, and production environments using automated pipelines where possible.
- Provide ongoing production support and troubleshooting for mission-critical applications, ensuring 24/7 availability.
- Document technical specifications, system changes, and migration workflows for future reference and team knowledge sharing.
Technical Skills & Experience
- Extensive experience in mainframe development with a strong focus on COBOL, JCL, and DB2 database management.
- Proven proficiency in Java development, particularly in the context of enterprise integration and API development.
- Hands-on experience with mainframe utilities and middleware such as CICS and various file management tools.
- Familiarity with modern DevOps tools and methodologies, including Jira for project tracking and Endevor for version control.
- Knowledge of Mainframe SAS and Zeke scheduling tools is highly desirable for managing complex batch processing.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to deconstruct complex legacy logic and refactor it for modern standards.
- Excellent communication skills, capable of working effectively in a remote, cross-functional team environment.
Modernization and Strategy
The successful candidate will play a vital role in the digital transformation journey of the organization. While maintaining the “gold standard” of mainframe reliability, you will be instrumental in building the bridges to the future. This involves not only technical coding but also strategic thinking regarding how legacy data can be leveraged in modern analytics and customer-facing applications. This remote position offers the flexibility of modern work-life balance while tackling some of the most challenging and rewarding technical puzzles in the industry today. You will be expected to take full ownership of your work, from initial analysis to final production deployment, ensuring that the systems that power the enterprise remain robust and future-proof.
