Role Overview: Senior Mainframe Developer
The insurance industry in 2026 continues to rely heavily on robust mainframe architectures to manage millions of policies and complex claims processing. As a Senior Mainframe Developer based in Omaha, Nebraska, you will be at the forefront of maintaining and modernizing these mission-critical systems. This role is specifically tailored for professionals with deep expertise in the Life Insurance domain, where understanding the nuances of policy lifecycles, actuarial data, and regulatory compliance is essential for success.
Key Responsibilities and Technical Scope
Your primary focus will involve coding stories related to system improvement, ensuring that the mainframe environment remains performant, secure, and scalable. You will lead activities related to the modernization and decommissioning of legacy mainframe systems, a critical initiative as the industry moves toward more integrated, hybrid-cloud solutions. This includes migrating data and logic while maintaining the absolute integrity of existing business rules. You will also be responsible for production support activities, ensuring that the core systems that power the insurance business remain operational 24/7.
- Develop and maintain high-quality code using COBOL, JCL, and CICS to support insurance business logic.
- Manage complex database interactions and data storage using DB2 and VSAM.
- Utilize modern mainframe tools such as Topaz for development, debugging, and performance tuning.
- Lead modernization efforts, including the de-commissioning of obsolete systems and the integration of mainframe data with modern APIs.
- Provide comprehensive production support, including batch monitoring and firecall support for critical system failures.
- Collaborate with business analysts and actuaries to translate complex insurance requirements into technical specifications.
- Perform system analysis and performance tuning to optimize batch processing windows.
Experience and Domain Expertise
With over 10 years of experience required, we are looking for a seasoned professional who can navigate the complexities of large-scale enterprise systems. Your background in the Life Insurance domain will allow you to provide immediate value by understanding the underlying data structures and business logic unique to the sector. You will be expected to mentor junior developers and contribute to the long-term architectural roadmap of the mainframe environment. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of delivering high-quality software in a fast-paced, regulated environment, demonstrating both technical excellence and a deep commitment to system reliability.
Technical Environment
The technical stack for this position includes Mainframe, JCL, COBOL, DB2, VSAM, CICS, and Topaz. Familiarity with modern DevOps practices within a mainframe context is a significant plus. Candidates must be comfortable working in a collaborative environment and possess strong communication skills to interact with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Special Requirements
Life Insurance Domain Knowledge required. Experience with Topaz and CICS is essential. Must be available for firecall support.
Compensation & Location
Salary: $135,000 – $175,000 per year (Estimated)
