Role Overview
As we move into 2026, the demand for legacy system modernization and maintenance remains critical, particularly within the healthcare sector. We are looking for a Senior Mainframe Developer specializing in COBOL and JCL to join our remote engineering team. This role is pivotal in ensuring the stability and efficiency of high-volume transaction processing systems that support millions of patient records and insurance claims. The candidate will be expected to navigate the complexities of modern mainframe environments while integrating with cloud-based front-ends and distributed databases.
Key Responsibilities
- Architect, develop, and maintain complex mainframe applications using COBOL, JCL, and DB2 to support enterprise-level healthcare operations.
- Analyze intricate business requirements within the healthcare domain to translate them into robust technical specifications and scalable code.
- Optimize batch processing schedules and online CICS transactions to ensure peak system performance and minimize latency during peak hours.
- Perform rigorous debugging and troubleshooting of production issues, utilizing advanced mainframe diagnostic tools to identify root causes quickly.
- Lead code review sessions to maintain high standards of code quality, ensuring adherence to security protocols and industry best practices.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including QA analysts, business stakeholders, and DevOps engineers, to deliver end-to-end solutions.
- Document system architectures and technical workflows to facilitate knowledge transfer and ensure future scalability of the mainframe footprint.
- Support large-scale system migrations, version upgrades, and infrastructure enhancements within the IBM z/OS environment.
- Implement automated testing scripts for mainframe components to improve deployment speed and reliability.
Technical Requirements
- Extensive experience in COBOL programming and JCL scripting within an IBM z/OS environment is mandatory.
- Proficiency in DB2 for mainframe, including complex SQL optimization, stored procedures, and database management.
- Hands-on expertise with CICS (Customer Information Control System) for high-performance online transaction processing.
- Familiarity with VSAM file structures and IMS database management systems to support legacy data retrieval.
- Experience with mainframe debugging and performance tuning tools such as Xpediter, Abend-AID, or Strobe.
- Solid understanding of the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) in both Agile and Waterfall frameworks, with a focus on continuous integration.
Healthcare Domain Expertise
The successful candidate must possess a strong background in the healthcare industry. Understanding HIPAA compliance, claims processing workflows, and electronic health record (EHR) data structures is essential. You will be responsible for ensuring that all developed code meets the stringent regulatory requirements of the healthcare sector while maintaining data integrity and security. Experience with HL7 or FHIR standards in a mainframe context is a significant plus, as the industry moves toward greater interoperability.
Why Join Us in 2026?
This position offers the flexibility of a fully remote work environment while providing the challenge of working on mission-critical systems. You will be at the forefront of maintaining the backbone of healthcare infrastructure, ensuring that vital services remain uninterrupted for providers and patients alike. We offer competitive contract rates and the opportunity to work with a team of seasoned professionals dedicated to technical excellence and innovation within the mainframe space.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related Engineering field.
- Minimum of 8-10 years of experience in mainframe development with a focus on COBOL and JCL.
- Proven track record of delivering high-quality software in a remote setting with minimal supervision.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders clearly.
