Role: Mainframe Engineer (Banking Domain Experience)

We are looking for an experienced Mainframe Engineer with a strong background in the banking domain for a contract role in Cleveland, OH. This position requires extensive experience in core mainframe technologies and a solid understanding of financial services or credit union systems.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain mainframe applications using COBOL (batch and online programs).
  • Utilize JCL for batch job scheduling and execution.
  • Work with CICS for online transaction processing.
  • Perform DB2 operations, including SQL, performance tuning, and data access.
  • Manage VSAM files and datasets within the Mainframe Environment.
  • Experience working on IBM z/OS environments.
  • Understand batch processing, scheduling, and job monitoring.
  • Utilize SCM tools such as Endevor, Changeman, or similar.
  • Perform debugging, performance tuning, and abend resolution.
  • Integrate mainframe systems with distributed or cloud platforms (APIs, MQ, file transfers, middleware).
  • Participate in modernization initiatives (COBOL refactoring, hybrid architectures).

Requirements:

  • 10+ years of experience in mainframe application development.
  • Strong hands-on experience with COBOL (batch and online).
  • Proficiency in JCL, CICS, and DB2 (SQL, performance tuning).
  • Familiarity with VSAM files and datasets.
  • Experience working on IBM z/OS environments.
  • Experience with SCM tools (Endevor, Changeman).
  • Experience working in financial services or credit union domains.
  • Exposure to core banking systems (e.g., Hogan, FIS, Fiserv, or equivalent).
  • Understanding of transaction integrity, audit controls, and regulatory compliance.
  • Experience integrating mainframe systems with other platforms is a plus.
  • Strong communication skills for interaction with business and IT stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently in a highly regulated, risk-aware environment.
  • Mentoring junior developers and sharing best practices.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience working in Agile, Waterfall, or hybrid delivery models.
  • Ownership mindset for production stability and service continuity.

Essential Skills:

  • Equivalent practical experience in mainframe application development is acceptable.
  • IBM Mainframe z/OS certifications are a plus.
  • Banking or Core Systems certifications (FIS, Hogan, etc.) are a plus.

Compensation & Location

Salary: $55 – $75 per year
