Position Summary
We are looking for a Senior Mainframe IMS System Programmer for a 12-month contract-to-hire opportunity in Plano, TX. This role is essential for the installation, customization, maintenance, and support of IBM’s Information Management System (IMS) environment on the z/OS mainframe platform. The successful candidate will ensure high availability, optimal performance, and robust security of IMS subsystems while providing technical expertise to application teams.
Core Responsibilities
- Install, configure, and maintain IMS (DB and TM) subsystems, including associated tools like IMS Connect, ODBM, and BMPs.
- Perform system upgrades, migrations, and apply maintenance (APARs/PTFs) to newer IMS versions.
- Manage SMP/E environments for software installation and maintenance tracking.
- Ensure seamless compatibility between IMS, z/OS, DB2, CICS, and other related mainframe products.
- Monitor IMS system performance and tune parameters to optimize throughput and response times.
- Conduct capacity planning and growth analysis to ensure system scalability and reliability.
- Utilize performance tracking tools such as OMEGAMON, Mainview, or RMF for problem diagnosis.
- Provide Level 3 technical support for IMS incidents, system abends, and database recovery issues.
- Maintain IMS catalog and RECON datasets, ensuring a robust backup and recovery strategy.
- Develop and maintain automation scripts using REXX, CLIST, or JCL to improve operational efficiency.
- Support modernization initiatives, including IMS Open Database and REST API integration.
- Participate in Disaster Recovery (DR) planning, testing, and documentation.
Technical Must-Haves
- 7+ years of experience as an IMS System Programmer on z/OS.
- Expertise in IMS installation, configuration, and DBRC operations.
- Strong knowledge of RECON management and GEN processes (ACB/DBD/PSB).
- Experience with IMS subsystem maintenance and SMP/E.
- Proficiency in mainframe storage management (DFSMS, VSAM).
- Ability to diagnose and resolve complex IMS database recovery and log issues.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with IMS integration to distributed systems via JDBC or ODBM.
- Familiarity with z/OSMF, z/OS Connect EE, or API enablement.
- Knowledge of ITIL processes and best practices.
- Microsoft Certified: Identity and Access Administrator Associate is a plus.

Compensation & Location
Salary: $85 – $120 per year (Estimated)
