We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Mainframe System Database Administrator (DBA) to join our mission-critical infrastructure team in Cleveland, Ohio. This role is pivotal in ensuring the stability, performance, and security of our enterprise-level DB2 environments. As a Senior Mainframe DBA, you will be responsible for the end-to-end management of DB2 objects, including databases, tablespaces, tables, and indexes, while maintaining the highest standards of data integrity and system availability.
Key Responsibilities and Technical Duties
- Comprehensive management of DB2 objects, ensuring optimal configuration of databases, tablespaces, and indexes to support high-volume transaction processing.
- Execution and oversight of critical DB2 commands, including STOP/START operations, DISPLAY commands, and the precise termination or cancellation of threads to maintain system health.
- Expert utilization of DB2 utilities such as REORG, RUNSTATS, COPY/RECOVER, LOAD/UNLOAD, and REPAIR to ensure data consistency and performance optimization.
- Performing complex BSDS (Boot Strap Data Set) updates using DSNJU003 and DSNJU004 utilities to support system recovery and configuration changes.
- Leading DB2 upgrades and migrations, including the application of SMP/E maintenance and patches to keep the environment current and secure.
- Leveraging industry-standard ISV tools from vendors such as BMC, CA, and IBM to enhance monitoring and management capabilities.
- Continuous performance monitoring and tuning using the DB2 catalog and advanced diagnostic tools to identify and resolve bottlenecks.
- Providing Tier 3 troubleshooting support for both DB2 system issues and complex application-level database queries.
- Managing security protocols, including the administration of grants, privileges, and access controls to protect sensitive enterprise data.
- Adhering to strict ITIL processes, including Incident, Problem, Change, and Configuration Management to ensure operational excellence.
- Active participation in Disaster Recovery (DR) planning, testing, and execution to guarantee business continuity in the event of a system failure.
Professional Environment and Expectations
The successful candidate will work within a collaborative environment that values technical excellence and proactive problem-solving. You will be expected to interface with application developers, system programmers, and business stakeholders to align database strategies with organizational goals. Given the nature of Mainframe environments, this role requires a deep understanding of z/OS operations and the ability to work under pressure during critical system events. We are looking for a professional who not only possesses technical depth but also demonstrates strong communication skills and a commitment to continuous improvement in the field of database administration.
Qualifications and Experience
- 8 to 10 years of dedicated experience in Mainframe DB2 Administration or System Programming.
- Profound knowledge of Mainframe architecture and DB2 internals.
- Demonstrated proficiency in JCL (Job Control Language) and z/OS system operations.
