Role Overview: PLC Engineer

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced PLC Engineer to join our dynamic team in Louisville, KY. This onsite position is critical for our end client’s industrial automation and OT modernization initiatives. As a PLC Engineer, you will be responsible for the design, programming, and implementation of complex control systems across various platforms. This role requires a deep understanding of industrial protocols, hardware integration, and the ability to bridge the gap between IT and OT environments. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in transforming legacy systems into modern, connected industrial environments that leverage the latest in IIoT and data analytics.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

  • Design and develop PLC/DCS and Safety Programming using industry-standard platforms such as ControlLogix, CompactLogix, and Siemens S7 series.
  • Create and maintain comprehensive Controls Libraries to ensure standardization across multiple projects and sites, facilitating easier maintenance and scalability.
  • Lead OT modernization efforts, including line integration and the development of robust solution architectures that support future growth.
  • Develop and configure HMI/SCADA and Batch Programming solutions to provide intuitive interfaces for operators and real-time data visualization for management.
  • Manage the full OT lifecycle, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards such as 21 CFR Part 11 and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) in regulated environments.
  • Perform hardware and software Bill of Materials (BoM) creation, ensuring all components are specified correctly for procurement and project budgeting.
  • Execute FAT (Factory Acceptance Testing) and SAT (Site Acceptance Testing) to validate system performance against technical specifications and client requirements.
  • Integrate sensors and field devices for real-time data extraction, configuring gateways and tag providers for seamless data flow into historian systems.
  • Collaborate with IT teams to integrate industrial systems with cloud platforms, virtualization environments, and corporate networks, ensuring cybersecurity policies are strictly followed.
  • Architect scalable and secure SCADA/MES/IIoT systems that align with ISA 95 standards for enterprise-control system integration.
  • Provide hypercare support and troubleshooting during the commissioning phase of industrial automation projects to ensure minimal downtime.
  • Conduct code reviews and enforce development standards to maintain high-quality software delivery and long-term system stability.
  • Serve as the primary technical point of contact for customers, leading requirements gathering sessions and technical workshops to define project scope.
  • Manage onsite-offshore coordination, leveraging global teams for development work while maintaining local project oversight and quality control.
  • Document lessons learned and contribute to the continuous improvement of delivery practices and internal knowledge bases.

Technical Requirements and Qualifications

  • Extensive expertise in PLC programming with platforms including MELSEC, Omron, and ABB controllers, with a focus on modular and reusable code.
  • Proven experience with industrial communication protocols such as OPC UA, MQTT, Modbus, and Ethernet/IP for heterogeneous system connectivity.
  • Strong proficiency in database management systems including SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL, and Oracle for historical data storage and analysis.
  • Experience with Edge Integration and Machine Learning applications within an industrial context is highly desirable for predictive maintenance solutions.
  • Ability to translate complex business needs into detailed technical specifications that can be executed by engineering teams.
  • Strong documentation skills for recording system architectures, network diagrams, and functional design specifications.
  • Willingness to travel up to 30% of the time to support various project sites and client locations as needed.
  • Must be comfortable working onsite in Louisville, KY, with standard working hours from 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM.
  • Excellent communication skills to present architecture decisions, implementation progress, and risk mitigation strategies to stakeholders.

Compensation & Location

Salary: $115,000 – $158,000 per year (Estimated)
