Role Overview

We are looking for a Senior Postgres Database Administrator (DBA) to manage and optimize our mission-critical database infrastructure. This role is essential for ensuring the high availability, performance, and security of our multi-terabyte database environments. The successful candidate will work in a hybrid capacity, requiring three days onsite per week at our offices in either Austin, TX or Sunnyvale, CA. Due to the nature of our global operations, all candidates must be able to support Pacific Standard Time (PST) hours regardless of their physical location.

Core Responsibilities

  • Manage and maintain large-scale PostgreSQL databases across on-premises and cloud platforms (AWS RDS/EC2 or GCP).
  • Execute complex database upgrades for both minor and major versions with a focus on zero-downtime strategies.
  • Design and implement robust database replication and point-in-time recovery (PITR) solutions.
  • Perform daily operational tasks, including monitoring load averages, resolving locks, and optimizing long-running SQL queries.
  • Fine-tune PostgreSQL configuration parameters and utilize system tables for performance diagnostics.
  • Oversee essential maintenance tasks such as vacuuming, indexing, and partitioning to ensure platform health.
  • Deploy and manage high-availability clusters using tools like Repmgr, pgpool, or EFM.
  • Support the containerization of database services using Kubernetes and other modern DevOps technologies.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to build scalable database infrastructure for high-volume transaction environments.

Technical Qualifications

  • Deep expertise in PostgreSQL architecture and internal mechanisms.
  • Extensive experience with backup and recovery tools such as pg_dump, pg_basebackup, and Barman.
  • Proven track record of administering multi-terabyte databases in production environments.
  • Hands-on experience with cloud-native database services (AWS RDS, Aurora, or Google Cloud SQL).
  • Strong proficiency in scripting for automation using Bash, Python, or Go.
  • Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code (Terraform/Ansible) and container orchestration (Kubernetes).
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

Additional Requirements

Candidates must be proactive learners who can independently master new technologies as they emerge. This position requires a high degree of technical ownership and the ability to troubleshoot complex issues under pressure. Please ensure that your application includes your current location and visa status, as these are mandatory requirements for the screening process.

Special Requirements

Onsite 3x per week. PST hours required for both Austin and Sunnyvale locations. Candidates must provide current location and visa status. Experience with Kubernetes or containerization required.
