Role Overview

The Power BI System Administrator will be a critical asset for the Central Ohio Transit Authority (COTA) in Columbus, OH. This onsite role focuses on the comprehensive management of the Power BI ecosystem, ensuring that data governance, security, and operational efficiency are maintained at the highest standards. As a senior-level administrator, you will not only manage the technical infrastructure but also serve as a mentor and trainer for internal employees, fostering a culture of data-driven decision-making. This position requires a hands-on professional who can navigate the complexities of enterprise data environments while providing high-level strategic oversight.

Key Responsibilities

  • Administration & Governance: You will be responsible for the end-to-end administration of the Power BI Service. This includes the strategic redesign of workspaces, management of datasets, dataflows, and capacities. You will establish and enforce governance standards, ensuring consistent naming conventions and workspace policies across the organization.
  • Security Management: Implementing and maintaining robust security protocols is paramount. You will configure Row-Level Security (RLS), manage security roles, and oversee data access governance to protect sensitive transit and operational data.
  • Operational Excellence: Monitoring system health is a daily priority. You will track refresh schedules, gateway performance, and capacity usage to prevent bottlenecks. Troubleshooting complex issues related to permission conflicts and report performance will be a core part of your duties.
  • Gateway & Connectivity: You will optimize on-premises data gateways, handling installations, upgrades, and clustering. Collaboration with IT and data engineering teams will ensure seamless connections between on-premise and cloud data sources.
  • User Enablement: Beyond technical tasks, you will provide administrative support to report developers and business analysts. This involves assisting with workspace setup, publishing workflows, and providing training on best practices for shared workspaces and dataset reuse.
  • Documentation: You are expected to create thorough documentation for system configurations, governance rules, and troubleshooting guides. A key deliverable is the end-of-contract handoff documentation to ensure a smooth transition to internal teams.

Required Qualifications

  • Extensive experience (3-5+ years) specifically in administering Power BI Service within a large-scale production environment.
  • Deep technical knowledge of Power BI architecture, including the nuances of capacities and dataflows.
  • Proven track record in managing tenant settings and complex security models.
  • Hands-on expertise with On-Premises Data Gateway configuration and troubleshooting.
  • Familiarity with Azure AD, AD Groups, and enterprise-level authentication protocols.
  • Strong communication skills, capable of explaining technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to diagnose complex refresh failures and capacity bottlenecks efficiently.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with Microsoft Fabric or broader Power Platform governance.
  • Proficiency in PowerShell scripting or utilizing Admin APIs for automation.
  • Background in enterprise BI platform management.

Compensation & Location

Salary: $115,000 – $155,000 per year (Estimated)
