Role Overview

As a Senior QA Engineer specializing in the Utilities sector, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring the reliability and safety of critical infrastructure systems. This remote position requires a deep understanding of Electric Generation Interconnection processes and the regulatory frameworks governing the energy industry. You will be responsible for designing and executing comprehensive test strategies that cover complex grid management software, billing systems, and real-time monitoring tools. Your expertise in utilities will allow you to identify edge cases specific to power distribution and generation, such as load balancing anomalies and interconnection synchronization issues. In this role, you will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including software developers, systems architects, and domain experts, to deliver high-quality software solutions that meet the rigorous demands of the utility industry. You will lead the automation efforts, selecting and implementing the right tools to streamline the testing lifecycle while maintaining high standards of accuracy. Furthermore, you will perform risk assessments and impact analyses for system upgrades and new feature deployments, ensuring that any changes do not compromise the stability of the electrical grid’s digital infrastructure. The ideal candidate will have over a decade of experience in quality assurance, with a significant portion dedicated to the energy and utilities domain. You must be proficient in various testing methodologies, including functional, regression, performance, and security testing. Your ability to communicate technical findings to non-technical stakeholders will be essential for driving project success. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to the modernization of the energy sector through cutting-edge technology and rigorous quality standards.

Detailed Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain automated test suites for utility-specific applications, focusing on scalability and reliability.
  • Conduct thorough manual testing for complex scenarios where automation is not feasible, particularly in legacy system integrations.
  • Analyze business requirements and technical specifications to create detailed test plans and test cases.
  • Collaborate with DevOps teams to integrate testing into the CI/CD pipeline, ensuring continuous quality throughout the development cycle.
  • Identify, document, and track software defects using industry-standard bug tracking tools.
  • Participate in code reviews and provide feedback from a quality perspective to improve overall software design.
  • Stay updated with the latest trends and technologies in both QA and the Utilities industry to drive innovation.
  • Mentor junior QA engineers and provide guidance on best practices in testing and domain-specific knowledge.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations, such as NERC CIP, during the testing process.
  • Perform end-to-end testing of interconnection processes, simulating real-world scenarios of power generation and distribution.

Technical Environment

The technical landscape involves a mix of modern cloud-based applications and legacy on-premise systems. You will work with tools such as Selenium, JMeter, and specialized utility simulation software. Understanding of SQL for data validation and experience with API testing using tools like Postman or SoapUI is highly desirable. Given the remote nature of the role, strong self-management skills and proficiency with collaboration tools like Jira, Confluence, and Slack are mandatory. You will be expected to participate in daily stand-ups and contribute to sprint planning and retrospective meetings. This role demands a proactive approach to problem-solving and a commitment to delivering excellence in a mission-critical environment.
