Role Overview: SAP Data Architect

The SAP Data Architect is a critical leadership position responsible for designing and implementing the foundational data structures that power our enterprise SAP environment. In the evolving landscape of 2026, where data is the primary fuel for artificial intelligence and advanced analytics, this role ensures that our SAP ecosystem—including S/4HANA, MDG, and Datasphere—is optimized for integrity, scalability, and performance. The successful candidate will act as a bridge between business strategy and technical execution, defining how data is captured, stored, and utilized across the global organization.

Core Responsibilities and Deliverables

  • Architectural Strategy: Develop and maintain comprehensive reference data architectures. This involves collaborating with application owners, security teams, and infrastructure leads to ensure that data flows are seamless and secure.
  • SAP MDG Leadership: Lead the implementation and optimization of SAP Master Data Governance (MDG) to ensure high-quality master data across domains such as Material, Customer, and Vendor.
  • Data Unification: Leverage SAP Business Data Cloud and SAP Datasphere to create a unified data fabric, reducing data silos and eliminating redundant data copies that lead to operational inefficiencies.
  • Governance and Compliance: Establish rigorous data governance standards, including metadata management, data lineage tracking, and clear ownership definitions to meet global regulatory requirements.
  • Performance Optimization: Protect core transactional systems by designing efficient extraction and replication strategies, preventing system degradation during high-volume data movements.
  • AI and Analytics Enablement: Ensure that the data foundation is robust enough to support cutting-edge AI use cases, providing clean, governed, and discoverable data sets for data scientists and business analysts.

Technical Proficiency and Experience

Candidates must possess a minimum of 10 years of experience in SAP data environments. Deep technical knowledge of SAP ECC and S/4HANA data structures is mandatory. Hands-on expertise with SAP BW, SAP MDG, and modern cloud platforms like SAP BTP is essential. The architect must be proficient in data modeling techniques and have a proven track record of integrating SAP data with non-SAP reporting platforms such as Snowflake, Azure Data Lake, or AWS Redshift. Understanding the nuances of transactional vs. master data in a global manufacturing or retail context is highly preferred.

Soft Skills and Leadership

Beyond technical excellence, this role requires a pragmatic mindset focused on simplification and value creation. You must be a clear communicator capable of explaining complex architectural trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders. The ability to drive consensus in Architectural Review Boards (ARB) and resolve conflicts regarding data ownership is vital. We are looking for a visionary who can align engineering teams around a shared data vision while maintaining a focus on reuse and cost-efficiency.

Work Environment

This is a high-impact, 6-month contract position based onsite in Austin, Texas. The role requires a 5-day-per-week physical presence to facilitate close collaboration with the local engineering and business teams. Austin’s vibrant tech scene provides the perfect backdrop for this transformative project, offering the architect an opportunity to influence the data strategy of a leading enterprise.

Special Requirements

5x/week onsite in Austin, TX; 6-month duration; 10+ years experience required.

Compensation & Location

Salary: $175,000 – $235,000 per year (Estimated)
