Role Overview

As a Senior Scrum Master specializing in the Banking sector, you will be at the forefront of driving agile transformation within our Data & Analytics division. This role is not just about facilitating meetings; it is about fostering a high-performance culture where data scientists, engineers, and analysts can thrive. In the complex landscape of modern banking, where data integrity and regulatory compliance are paramount, your expertise in Scrum will ensure that we deliver value incrementally and reliably. You will be responsible for facilitating the agile development process and ensuring the team follows Scrum practices. You will work closely with data scientists, analysts, engineers, and stakeholders to deliver valuable data products and insights. Your role will involve removing obstacles, promoting collaboration, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities and Facilitation

  • Lead and facilitate all standard Scrum ceremonies, including Daily Stand-ups, Sprint Planning, Sprint Reviews, and Retrospectives, ensuring they are productive and time-boxed.
  • Act as a servant leader to the Data & Analytics team, removing any organizational or technical impediments that hinder progress.
  • Collaborate closely with Product Owners to manage the backlog, ensuring user stories are well-defined, estimated, and ready for development.
  • Promote a culture of transparency by maintaining highly visible information radiators, such as Burndown charts and Velocity tracking.
  • Coach the team on Agile principles, helping them transition from a ‘doing agile’ mindset to ‘being agile’.

Strategic Collaboration and Stakeholder Management

  • Serve as the primary bridge between technical data teams and business stakeholders within the banking hierarchy.
  • Manage expectations and provide clear communication regarding project timelines, risks, and delivery milestones.
  • Work with other Scrum Masters to coordinate dependencies across different teams, particularly in large-scale data warehousing projects.
  • Assist in the definition of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that align with both agile maturity and business objectives.

Technical and Domain Expertise

  • Apply your deep understanding of the Banking domain to help the team navigate complex data structures and regulatory requirements.
  • Utilize tools like JIRA and Confluence to maintain rigorous documentation and workflow management.
  • Support the team in implementing CI/CD pipelines for data products, ensuring that agile practices extend into the technical delivery layer.
  • Foster an environment of continuous learning, encouraging the exploration of new data visualization tools like Tableau or Power BI to enhance sprint reviews.

Continuous Improvement and Risk Mitigation

  • Conduct deep-dive retrospectives that go beyond the surface level to identify root causes of inefficiencies.
  • Implement action items from retrospectives to ensure the team is constantly evolving and improving its throughput.
  • Identify potential project risks early in the sprint cycle and work with the team to develop robust mitigation strategies.
  • Ensure that the team remains focused on the Sprint Goal, protecting them from outside interference and scope creep.
  • Advocate for technical debt reduction, ensuring that the long-term health of the data architecture is not sacrificed for short-term gains.

Qualifications and Professional Standards

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a technical field such as Computer Science or Data Science is required to understand the nuances of the team’s work.
  • Active CSM (Certified Scrum Master) or PSM (Professional Scrum Master) certification is mandatory.
  • A minimum of 5-7 years of experience in a Scrum Master role, with at least 3 years specifically within a financial services or banking environment.
  • Exceptional soft skills, including conflict resolution, active listening, and the ability to influence without formal authority.

Special Requirements

Banking domain experience required. Experience with Data & Analytics teams preferred.
