Avance Consulting is seeking a highly skilled and hands-on Technical Scrum Master to lead a dynamic agile squad in New York City. This contract position is designed for a professional who can seamlessly blend servant leadership with technical acumen to deliver cutting-edge web and cloud features. As we move into 2026, the complexity of modern tech stacks requires a Scrum Master who does more than just facilitate meetings; you will be a strategic partner to engineers, helping to navigate the intricacies of cloud-native development and unblock delivery at every stage of the lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
- Facilitate all core Agile ceremonies, including backlog grooming, sprint planning, daily stand-ups, sprint reviews, and retrospectives, ensuring they are productive and outcome-oriented.
- Drive continuous improvement within the squad by fostering a culture of accountability, transparency, and high performance.
- Partner closely with Product Owners to refine project scope, clarify complex acceptance criteria, and manage comprehensive release plans that align with business goals.
- Proactively identify and remove technical and organizational impediments, escalating risks when necessary to maintain momentum.
- Coordinate effectively across multiple teams and stakeholders to manage dependencies and ensure a cohesive delivery strategy.
- Track and report critical team metrics, such as velocity and burndown charts, while maintaining impeccable Jira and Confluence hygiene.
- Coach the team on agile best practices and servant leadership principles to enhance delivery predictability.
- Support Program Increment (PI) Planning and cross-team dependency management within a scaled agile environment.
Technical Requirements and Qualifications
- Extensive experience as a Scrum Master with a proven track record of leading at least 2 to 3+ end-to-end sprints and successful product releases.
- Working knowledge of core AWS services, including EC2, Lambda, S3, CloudWatch, and IAM, sufficient to understand architectural trade-offs and operational challenges.
- Solid understanding of CI/CD concepts and modern toolchains, such as Git pipelines and automated deployment strategies.
- Familiarity with micro-frontends and modern web delivery patterns to better support the engineering team’s technical decisions.
- Expert-level command of Jira and Confluence for project tracking and documentation.
- Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to engage with both technical engineers and business leadership.
- Experience participating in PI Planning within SAFe or similar scaled agile frameworks is highly desirable.
Preferred Skills and Domain Knowledge
- Professional certifications such as CSM, PSM, or SAFe (SSM/SASM) are a significant plus.
- Prior exposure to the Financial Services or Insurance (FS/Insurance) domain is highly valued.
- Ability to ask the right technical questions to challenge assumptions and keep the team focused on high-value outcomes.
Special Requirements
Screening prompts include: describing unblocking teams with conflicting priorities, approach to sprint planning with unclear requirements, and using AWS/CICD knowledge to influence delivery. Domain preference: Financial Services/Insurance.
