Role Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled Senior BI Engineer with deep expertise in Semantic Layer design, Data Modeling, and Analytics Engineering to join our growing data organization. This role is pivotal in bridging the gap between complex data engineering pipelines and intuitive, high-performance analytical consumption layers. As a Senior BI Engineer, you will be responsible for designing, governing, and delivering trusted analytical data products that power enterprise-wide business intelligence, self-service analytics, and embedded application use cases. The ideal candidate possesses a strong command of both open-source semantic layer technologies and enterprise BI semantic models, with a proven ability to translate intricate business requirements into governed analytical models consumed by a wide range of stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and maintain enterprise-grade semantic layers, including fact/dimension models, relationship definitions, metrics, and calculated measures.
- Build and evolve analytical models that balance performance, usability, and governance across various BI tools.
- Apply industry best practices in dimensional modeling, star/snowflake schemas, and metric standardization to ensure data integrity.
- Define and manage business-friendly metrics and KPIs to ensure consistency across all consuming tools and departments.
- Develop and manage open-source semantic layers (e.g., Cube) for headless BI and API-driven use cases.
- Design and support enterprise semantic models including Microsoft Fabric, Power BI Tabular Models (DAX), and LookML (Looker).
- Enable interoperability and reuse of semantic definitions across multiple BI and analytical platforms.
- Establish and enforce semantic layer governance, including metric definitions, naming conventions, versioning, and access controls.
- Partner with data governance teams to ensure alignment with enterprise standards and data policies.
- Own analytics as data products, ensuring clarity of purpose, documentation, quality checks, and reliable delivery to end consumers.
- Support auditability, lineage, and trust in analytical outputs through rigorous documentation and testing.
- Collaborate closely with business stakeholders, data engineers, and platform teams to gather requirements and translate them into scalable analytical models.
- Drive solutions from raw data through curated models and semantic layers to final BI consumption.
- Support downstream use cases including dashboards, self-service exploration, and embedded analytics.
- Optimize semantic models for performance, cost efficiency, and scalability within cloud data warehouse environments.
Technical Requirements
- Extensive experience in BI and semantic layer modeling within large-scale enterprise environments.
- Deep understanding of data modeling for analytics, including complex relationships, hierarchies, measures, and aggregations.
- Hands-on experience with open-source semantic layer tools such as Cube.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Fabric and Power BI Tabular Models, specifically with DAX.
- Expertise in LookML for Looker-based environments.
- Solid SQL expertise and familiarity with modern cloud data warehouses (Snowflake, BigQuery, or Databricks).
- Understanding of API-driven analytics and headless BI patterns.
- Experience with Analytics Engineering workflows and tools like dbt is highly preferred.
This is a long-term contract position with a tentative start date in March 2026. While remote work is discussed, there is a strong preference for candidates local to Kansas City, Missouri. The role is graded at C to D1 level, reflecting the high level of seniority and technical leadership required.
