Role Overview
The Senior Backup Storage Engineer is a pivotal leadership role within the IT infrastructure department, responsible for overseeing the most complex aspects of system hardware and software products. This position involves the end-to-end lifecycle of storage solutions, including modification, installation, testing, and implementation. As a senior-level professional, you will be expected to plan and manage core system hardware in alignment with the organization’s overarching IT architecture and evolving business requirements. This role is specifically designed for experts in data protection and recovery, often referred to in the industry as Backup/Recovery Engineers or Storage Administrators.
Core Responsibilities
- Lead the administration, installation, and configuration of diverse backup and storage systems, including CommVault, Dell/EMC, IBM, NetApp, and Pure Storage.
- Develop and manage CommVault backup jobs for a variety of environments, including Linux, UNIX, and Windows hosts.
- Execute complex storage provisioning tasks such as masking, zoning, and provisioning for UNIX, Windows, and VMware servers.
- Manage Network Attached Storage (NAS) using NDMP and oversee database backups for DB2, SQL, Oracle, and PostgreSQL.
- Drive data backup and recovery support for major cloud service providers, including Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform (GCP), and IBM Cloud.
- Perform regular system health checks, upgrades, and performance tuning to ensure minimum downtime and maximum reliability.
- Analyze technical issues reported by internal and external teams, providing expert recommendations and architectural designs.
- Ensure all security products and storage interfaces are patched and secured according to enterprise standards.
Technical Environment and Skills
The successful candidate will possess an in-depth understanding of CommVault Complete Data Protection and VMware data protection using VADP (VMware vStorage API for Data Protection). Proficiency in configuring storage arrays with business continuity solutions is essential. You will be expected to lead storage migration and data center consolidation projects with precision. Technical expertise must extend to Pure Storage hardware and software, IBM storage system management, and Dell storage optimization. Familiarity with NetApp solutions like ONTAP, SnapMirror, and SnapVault is required. Furthermore, the role demands proficiency in scripting languages such as PowerShell and Python to automate routine storage management workflows. A strong foundation in UNIX systems (IBM AIX, Linux, HP-UX) and TCP/IP networking is mandatory for troubleshooting complex connectivity issues.
Strategic Impact
Beyond technical execution, the Senior Backup Storage Engineer acts as a bridge between technical teams and business stakeholders. You will translate complex technical data into actionable information for non-technical audiences, ensuring that storage strategies align with business continuity goals. Your ability to evaluate new application software technologies and implement scalable cloud solutions will directly impact the organization’s digital transformation journey. Attention to detail and effective time management are critical as you balance daily maintenance with long-term architectural planning.
