Software Engineer, Digital Manufacturing – Remote Opportunity

The manufacturing industry is currently experiencing a digital revolution, often referred to as Industry 4.0. At the heart of this transformation is the integration of sophisticated software solutions with traditional industrial processes. We are looking for a Software Engineer specializing in Digital Manufacturing to join our team in a fully remote capacity. This role is dedicated to building modern, highly customized digital applications on top of the Ignition platform to support complex discrete manufacturing operations for a major US defense contractor. This is a high-impact position that requires a blend of traditional software engineering discipline and an understanding of real-time industrial systems.

Key Responsibilities and Technical Focus

  • Application Development on Ignition: You will use the Ignition platform as a foundation to design and develop responsive industrial web applications. This involves extending out-of-the-box components using JavaScript, CSS, and Python scripting.
  • Full-Stack Development: The role is approximately 80% front-end and 20% back-end. You will focus on creating intuitive user interfaces while ensuring robust backend logic and data integration.
  • Systems Integration: A significant portion of the work involves integrating applications with enterprise systems such as SAP, SharePoint, and Active Directory, as well as industrial data sources like OPC and historians (Kepware, Canary).
  • Data Modeling: You will design efficient data models and SQL queries optimized for real-time operational use, ensuring that manufacturing data is both accessible and actionable.
  • Collaborative Engineering: You will work directly with operations teams, engineers, and business analysts to translate complex manufacturing workflows into digital solutions that improve efficiency on the shop floor.

Mandatory Skills and Experience

  • Web Development Fundamentals: Strong experience with HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, and responsive design is required.
  • Python Scripting: Proficiency in Python is essential for developing application logic and automation scripts within the Ignition environment.
  • Manufacturing Domain Expertise: Candidates must have experience in automobile or heavy metal manufacturing. Understanding production workflows and real-time operational constraints is vital.
  • Software Engineering Discipline: We are looking for engineers who can design maintainable, modular software architectures, not just single-purpose screens.
  • Educational Requirements: A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field is required.

The Future of Industrial Software

As a Software Engineer in Digital Manufacturing, you will be at the forefront of the ‘Smart Factory’ movement. By leveraging platforms like Ignition and integrating them with modern web technologies, you are helping to create a more connected and efficient industrial ecosystem. This role offers the unique challenge of applying modern software development practices to the world of heavy industry and defense contracting. Whether it is optimizing a production line for aerospace components or improving data visibility in a shipyard, your work will have a direct impact on the efficiency and safety of industrial operations. This remote position provides the flexibility to work from anywhere while contributing to some of the most advanced manufacturing projects in the United States. In addition to technical skills, the ideal candidate will possess a strong analytical mindset, capable of troubleshooting complex integration issues between legacy industrial hardware and modern software interfaces. The project involves working with high-tempo production environments where system reliability is paramount. You will be expected to implement comprehensive error handling and diagnostic tools to ensure 24/7 operational uptime. This role also provides an opportunity to mentor junior developers and contribute to the establishment of team-wide coding standards and best practices for industrial software development.

Special Requirements

Remote; LinkedIn profile required; 80% Front-end / 20% Back-end split; Mandatory experience in automobile or heavy metal manufacturing; Experience with Ignition platform preferred.
