Role Overview

The Senior Appian Certified Developer role is a high-impact position within the Texas public sector landscape. As the state continues to modernize its legacy systems, the Appian platform serves as a cornerstone for rapid application development and process automation. This specific engagement with the Department of Information Resources (DIR) focuses on delivering robust solutions for Health and Human Services, requiring a developer who not only understands the technical nuances of SAIL (Self-Assembling Interface Layer) but also the regulatory and compliance frameworks inherent in government projects. Candidates must possess a Level 2 Appian Developer Certification, which signifies a professional-level mastery of the platform’s capabilities, including advanced process modeling, complex data types (CDTs), and sophisticated integration patterns.

Key Responsibilities

  • Architect and develop complex process models and SAIL interfaces to meet business requirements.
  • Integrate Appian applications with external RDBMS and web services using REST and SOAP APIs.
  • Lead Agile ceremonies and provide technical mentorship to junior developers within the team.
  • Ensure application performance and scalability through rigorous unit and integration testing.
  • Collaborate with business analysts and stakeholders to translate complex needs into technical specifications.
  • Optimize UI performance and responsiveness for high-traffic public sector applications.
  • Write comprehensive unit and integration tests to ensure the stability of the low-code environment.
  • Manage security roles and data privacy protocols consistent with Health and Human Services standards.

Technical Requirements and Environment

The technical stack involves not just Appian, but a comprehensive understanding of how low-code platforms interact with the broader IT ecosystem. This includes working with SQL for data persistence, understanding Java for custom plug-in development if necessary, and mastering the Appian Integration objects for seamless connectivity with third-party APIs. The Level 2 certification is a mandatory validation of these skills, and candidates must be prepared to provide physical or digital proof of this credential upon submission. Furthermore, the role involves performance tuning. As applications scale, the complexity of process models can lead to bottlenecks. The Senior Developer will be tasked with analyzing execution logs, identifying slow-running processes, and refactoring SAIL code to minimize load times. This level of optimization is crucial for the high-traffic environments typical of state-level health services.

Professional Expectations

The project environment is strictly Agile, demanding a proactive approach to problem-solving and the ability to pivot based on evolving stakeholder requirements. Technical expectations include the ability to design intuitive user interfaces that adhere to accessibility standards, ensuring that public-facing applications are usable by all citizens. Beyond technical skills, the ideal candidate will demonstrate strong communication abilities. You will be expected to participate in daily stand-ups, sprint planning, and retrospective meetings, providing clear updates on progress and identifying potential blockers early. The preference for Texas-based candidates highlights the collaborative nature of the DIR’s initiatives, even within a telework framework, as occasional on-site meetings or local coordination may be necessary. The requirement for Public Sector experience is non-negotiable. The client is looking for individuals who understand the lifecycle of government contracts, the importance of documentation, and the specific data privacy concerns associated with Health and Human Services. This 12-month contract offers a significant opportunity to contribute to the digital transformation of Texas state services, impacting millions of residents through improved efficiency and service delivery.

Special Requirements

Visa constraints: H4, GC EAD, GC, and USC only. Screening: Vendor must verify Level 2 Appian Certification and provide a copy with resume. Domain: Mandatory Public Sector/Health Human Services experience. Residency: Telework allowed but preference for candidates residing in Texas.
