Job Overview:

The Texas Department of Public Safety is seeking two Support Technician 3 (System Administrators) to support the migration and modernization of End-of-Life (EOL) systems. This role involves upgrading legacy systems running older versions of Windows and Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) to supported OS versions (e.g., Windows Server 2016/2019/2022, RHEL 5/6/7/8/9) to enhance security, performance, and operational continuity.

Key Responsibilities:

  • System Assessment & Planning: Assess legacy systems (RHEL 5, 6, and older Windows Server versions), prioritize migration based on criticality and security risks, and develop a comprehensive migration strategy.
  • System Migration: Migrate legacy RHEL and Windows systems to newer, supported OS versions. Perform reinstallation following best practices, implement robust data backup and recovery strategies, and validate system functionality post-upgrade.
  • Configuration Management: Reconfigure system services and settings after OS upgrades, utilize configuration management tools like Ansible and PowerShell, and write automation scripts for repetitive tasks.
  • Security Enhancements: Perform system hardening, apply security patches and updates, remediate vulnerabilities, and ensure compliance with internal security policies and industry standards.
  • Troubleshooting and Support: Act as the point of escalation for system issues during migration, provide ongoing support for Windows Server and RHEL systems post-migration, and troubleshoot OS-level and application problems.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Maintain detailed documentation of the migration process, update system configuration records, and provide regular progress reports to stakeholders.
  • Collaboration and Coordination: Work closely with other IT teams, coordinate with third-party vendors, and communicate with end-users about system downtime or changes.
  • Training and Knowledge Transfer: Create user manuals and internal documentation, and share insights from the migration process.
  • Backup & Disaster Recovery: Ensure backup solutions are in place and update disaster recovery plans for systems post-migration.
  • Post-Implementation Review: Conduct post-migration audits and identify system performance improvements or further enhancements.

Candidate Skills and Qualifications:

  • Minimum Requirements: 8 years of experience with RHEL and Windows OS.
  • Other Special Requirements: Experience in maintaining, analyzing, troubleshooting, and repairing computer systems, hardware, and peripherals. Documenting, maintaining, upgrading, or replacing hardware and software systems. Supporting and maintaining user account information. Performing basic operation, monitoring, installation, troubleshooting, relocations, or maintenance of communications equipment. Identifying and resolving basic communications problems. Awareness of standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Assisting in monitoring and providing assistance on the use and interface of systems, subsystems, and software applications.
  • May be responsible for accessing data from and transferring data to various local, state, or federal databases.
  • May assist in the review and recommendation of the procurement and inventory of information resources hardware or software.
  • May write and update personal computer and mainframe application programs.
  • Knowledge of the practices, principles, and techniques of computer operations, information systems, computer software and hardware, and information security policies and procedures.
  • Skill in the use and support of personal computers, in the use of applicable programs and systems, and in troubleshooting information systems.
  • Ability to operate information technology systems, to communicate effectively, and to train others.
  • Provides assistance in the design, development, and maintenance of various system applications.
  • Provides technical assistance and support for applications and hardware problems.
  • Installs, maintains, moves, and assists in testing and upgrading new and existing hardware/software.
  • Reviews and recommends procurement of information technology equipment.
  • Maintains the necessary security controls over software.
  • Makes presentations and briefings for training sessions.
  • Prepares briefings, reports, and evaluations on system efficiency and utilization.

Special Requirements

Face-to-face interview required. Only locals to Texas. No relocation. Visa copy, DL copy, and passport number copy are a must. State experience is a huge plus. Criminal background checks may be required.


Compensation & Location

Salary: $70,000 – $100,000 per year (Estimated)

Location: Austin, TX
