Position Summary: Tech Lead – Mainframe SRE
We are seeking a highly skilled Tech Lead – Mainframe Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) specializing in Application Support to join our team in Tampa, FL. This role is pivotal in ensuring the stability, reliability, and performance of our complex mainframe-based applications. As a Tech Lead, you will not only provide high-level technical support but also drive the implementation of SRE principles to reduce toil and enhance system availability. You will work closely with external vendors and internal stakeholders to manage incidents, perform root cause analysis, and implement long-term corrective actions. This position offers the opportunity to work with cutting-edge monitoring tools while maintaining legacy systems that are critical to the business.
Core Responsibilities
- Provide expert-level technical support for complex mainframe applications, ensuring minimal downtime and optimal performance.
- Lead troubleshooting efforts for critical incidents and oversee the implementation of corrective measures.
- Utilize advanced monitoring tools like Dynatrace, Splunk, and Zenoss to proactively identify and resolve system issues.
- Develop and implement short-term and long-term solutions for recurring defects and operational bottlenecks.
- Build and maintain monitoring, alerting, and availability dashboards to improve system visibility.
- Drive process enhancements and streamline communication across discovery, development, and deployment phases.
- Focus on automation and continuous service improvement to eliminate manual toil and reduce recurring changes.
- Collaborate with development teams to document production issues and validate code fixes.
- Manage customer-impacting incidents, including business impact assessment and technical resolution.
- Maintain and update the knowledge base with known errors, solutions, and data issue clarifications.
- Work closely with the Problem Review team for ongoing tracking and mitigation of known system problems.
Technical Qualifications
- Deep expertise in Z/OS and MVS environments, including tools like TSO, ISPF, and FileAid.
- Proficiency in mainframe languages and utilities: COBOL, Easytrieve, JCL, IBM utilities, SORT, and AbendAid.
- Experience with change management tools like ChangeMan and debugging tools like Xpediter.
- Strong knowledge of CICS and MQ on z issues, including problem resolution and system coordination.
- Hands-on experience with batch scheduling tools such as Zeke or Zena.
- Working knowledge of SQL Server or equivalent relational database systems.
- Familiarity with ITIL processes and tools like ServiceNow for incident and change management.
- Exposure to Cloud Infrastructure (Azure or AWS) and its integration with mainframe ecosystems.
- Understanding of SDLC methodologies, including Waterfall and Agile.
Leadership and Communication
- Excellent oral and written communication skills for effective stakeholder management.
- Ability to present suggestions and best practices while remaining flexible and open to feedback.
- Proven track record of managing interfacing support teams and external product vendors.
- Commitment to maximum uptime, reliability, and predictability through repeatable processes and metrics.
- Ability to mentor junior team members and provide technical guidance on complex issues.
